Post subject: Crossover or direct cable

Hello.

I'm new to the foruns so please excuse me for any mistakes I may make.

I did a search and I didn't find anything related, excuse me if there is already a thread talking about this subject.

I've just softmodded my original Xbox and I'm transferring my backups through FTP, since my drive is loud as hell and I'm afraid it may break, using a normal router (PC - Router - Xbox) I'm getting transfer speeds between 7-9 MB/s.

My question is, would a crossover cable improve the transfer speed?

Thank you very much.

(Sorry for the mistakes, English is not my native language)

NO!
not at all!
if the network is properly configured, you shouldn't notice any lag/timeouts whatsoever!
direct cables are for intermediaries such as routers and router/hubs/switches!
crossover cables are for DIRECT 1/1 computer to console setups!
only worth a f*ck if there's NO router/hubs/switches option!
in some RARE cases, the router/hubs/switches ARE compatible with crossover cables making the cable type used irrelevant!
....
hope that clarifies stuffs! Razz

Thank you for the reply.

I know that crossover cables are for direct connections, my question is, is the difference between [PC - Router - Xbox] and [PC - Xbox] worth buying a crossover cable?

Thanks.

Think of it like this:

A crossover cable is a two way street so allows traffic in both directions

A regular ethernet cable is a one way street only allowing traffic in one direction

A router acts like a traffic cop on a one way street allowing each direction to take a turn.

In actual fact the network plays no part in the speed. You dont even need the router to be hooked up to the internet. Its simply a facilitator.

The XBOX will allow a max of 10mbps transfer so all speed is dictated by how fast your PC can copy and your XBOX can write the data to HDD.

If your XBOX HDD is crapping its pants, slow or fast wont make a difference that sucker is still gonna crap out. Some HDDs are just loud, older Hitachi drives are like a Harley but the noise isnt a sign of it dying.

Thank you very much for your help Very Happy

I bought a crossover cable anyway, I'm planning on use it to stream my PS2 backups from my notebook, that way I can put the consoles a few meters away from my router without having to worry about cables across the floor.
