So I decided it was time to softmod my original xbox today. I have had no problems with it the past few days playing games. Today, it booted up fine and started Splinter Cell with no issues. But when I pressed the button to eject, the audio/video cut off and it won't eject. So i'm hitting a brick wall before I've even started. Every 'fix' I find is for someone who has already modded their xbox - I have not!

have you serviced the console at all?
i've heard of familiar happening (as you describe) to others but i've not had that particular issue myself!
disassemble the unit and reassemble, clean any dirty parts if required...
.......
double check to see if the AV and power lead is connected, seems an obvious route but i've had power issues before and the cables were unforgiving and had to practically be crammed in for a connection, were third party cheap shit though!
...........
i'm not sure about the next move here BUT if you've been running that console modded before you ran into issues, get SPPV's XBMC installer (found onsite) and write that to disk...(dvd)
when done, put it in the dvd drawer and power up the console...
if it boots you'll be taken to the XBMC installer frontened where you can select which dash you want, CREATE an epprom backup (stressing the epprom backup bit there) and restore/use embedded M$ dash 5960 files...i'm getting off track here!
if this isn't an option but you HAVE the console eeprom to hand, look for SPPV's autobuilder (found onsite) and follow the enclosed instructions TO THE LETTER!
i'm shooting in the dark here, more info please!
if the console ISN'T modded (and you DIDN'T get it's eeprom off it) but you can still play RETAIL games, get Halo 2 and run the embedded M$ dash update as that'll retore the C:/ volume back to factory defaults and freeing it up to be softmodded again! (and when softmodded, BACKUP THE EEPROM VIA AVALAUNCH)
good luck! Very Happy Cool
[edit]...i'm going out on a limb here but it has to be a loose connection...
if you haven't AT ALL had that console modded, service the console, make sure nothing is jarred and properly seated/connected...what do you have to lose? (if you haven't got the eeprom off it before today, sounds like trouble...the eeprom "if not running a hardmod" is the most vital part of a softmod, without it, you be fucked!) Embarassed

This xbox has never been modded. It is still quite legit. I modded my roommate's xbox a few years back with no issues.
When I say I get no audio/video, i mean it. Turn box on, it hear the drives spin up and whatnot, but nothing is displayed. I literally hit the eject button and the screen goes black (like it usually does as it goes back to the dashboard), but this time nothing came back up. Seems like quite the coincidence that it happened at the exact moment I hit eject.

So you can't get any audio/video out of the console now? Or just when you hit eject?

then give the console a good servicing!
take it apart and reassemble it!
could just be a coincidence but i'm certain a part/cable has jarred loose and not connected properly, even if you haven't got into yourself, it can happen!
every one of my dreamcasts showed power cut-out signs and i hadn't even seen inside their guts, they still had the warranty seals on them....
basically, the mains switch on the console came loose from where it was connected, the console would sporadically reset off it's own accord.
all i did was re-seat/reconnect everything...i've not had another issue like it again! (cheap assembly line standards)
your console may have something jarred loose? (even the best cared for items can have manufacturer defects/assembly inconsistencies)
give it a once-over...give the girl a service!

OK clarification is needed. You saying when you went to eject Spliter Cell says you were on the last step of the mod and technicaly the mod has been installed. If you didnt go through the entire mod process please say. And you said you experienced issues playig games before hand, was it a loss of AV like this?

If so the video chip, pprt or AV Pack/Cable is kaput. The chance of this being a software error is minimal. In the software scenario only things you can try is coldbooting (put the disc in the xbox turn it off then back on) is XBMC Installer 3.2.2 or unplug the dvd drive wait about 20 seconds and hotswap mod/rebuild the HDD with an AutoBuilder disc. But honestly software would be the last culprit on my list.

No, I have not even begun to mod ANYTHING. I only got as far as putting the save on my memory pack, then I had to go back to the dashboard to copy the save file to the hd. So I hit eject and bam. Spent time yesterday cleaning and reassembling, to no avail.

And for Dartht33bagger, hitting eject was the cause of the problem. I get no audio/video at all from the xbox after multiple restarts, cleanings and reassembles.

If you can't get anything to show up, you must have some sort of hardware failure or a faulty AV wire. Why hitting the eject button would cause this, I don't know.
