Hi all,
I going with a friend tomorrow to buy him an xbox for just $25 with four controllers, the power and composite cables thrown in.
The only problem with the xbox is that the DVD disk drive is shot (i.e. it can't read disks anymore).
I've been searching on forums around the net. At first I thought any old IDE DVD drive could work as a replacement, provided it fits. That would open up a lot of cheap possibilities.
But a post on this site said you must find an xbox specific dvd drive first:
To replace an xbox dvd drive the other must be an old drive removed from another xbox? True/False
Thanks all

true or false? try yes or no! that works
RIGHT!
i haven't been on these boards that long and i answered whether or not xbox dvd roms can be replaced on the fly and YES is the resounding answer!
if the xbox swapout/replacement works, you're golden!
as for using a standard ide/pata drive that's native to computers, it's NOT as straight forward! ONLY a handful are compatible and SERIOUS modifications to the xbox and dvd rom is required!! (and i haven't f*ckin done it, BOOBTUBE may help there?)
again, another short lived response from me!
[edit]....you can BUY a replacement dvd rom but if you can get one from a fucked console (if the drive works) you can use that! look on E-GAY for those! (personally, if i'm buying console parts, id sooner ask here rather than entertain that bullshit known as E-$HIT!) _________________ to all my friends... farewell and all the best to future prosperity... and remember, be excellent to each other!

If you dont mind the frankenstein approach all PC IDE DVD drives work with XBOX. Use a molex splitter to split the power from the HDD. Leave the power going to the XBOX DVD drive but plug its IDE into the PC drive. This will allow you to run burned media but not retail. Samsung, Philips and LG all released PC drives you could flash to read retail but require hardware mod to work as the power must come from the XBOX DVD power cord or it will kick you an E12 and not work.
We have tuts onsite that explain all this, just browse the tut section

You can also hack the old drive apart and use the IO board to fool the Xbox into thinking there is a legit drive there. Then, you plug in your new drive and it should read retail (?). If it doesn't, then I think it does something better than just plugging it in. I wish the original Xbox didn't have that weird mobo connector, and just used IDE communication. _________________

Hi all,
Thanks for the advice SPPV. I'll try the tuts section again. Wasn't having a lot of luck the first shot, but let's see what a little perseverance does this time :')
@Prehistoric
Yeah another guy I know through Xlink kai's facebook page told me that M$ put some kind of EEPROM-like key on their dvd drives. So it requires taking out some kind of PCB board from the OEM xbox dvd drive and putting it onto the new one.
I'll see what some more searching on hq tuts turns up and ask questions later if needed.

Its the device ready ID. Normaly that would be picked up via IDE, but M added it to that proprieary power cable. 2 wires carry the device ready signal. Thats why you need to have it running to your bunk drive or the board otherwise it will think there no DVD at bootup. For retail games though your SOL using a P drive except for the few that can be flashed. Ive done the frankenstein approach a few times and it never read retail just burned. You will see the sme on your PC. Pop in a retail game and try to rip it the PC will spit it out. Pop in a burned game and Imgburn can dump a legit ISO of it no issue.

SPPV, isn't that because the disc spins in the other direction in Xbox drives? _________________

No, it spins in the same direction, it just reads from the outside in, instead of from the inside out like a standard DVD. There is a small partition on a retail Xbox 1 DVD that reads like a standard DVD, and that's the part that gives you the video message about playing the DVD on an Xbox when you put it in a DVD player.

@Heimdall
Can any IDE drive have firmware uploaded to it that reverses it's polarity so that it can be placed in any xbox?
Or do any a few brands and models have the tools for that?
If so then I can just buy a $5 IDE dvd drive from a guy I got a tower from for doing the hard drive upgrade.

You are best off to scour around for cheap/free/'broken' xboxes to cannibalize for drives.
