Hey SPPV,

Since I'll upgrade to a new HDD and my EEPROM sits in my desktop,I've been messing around with my factory HDD.

I've been using XBMC installer 3.2.2 disk to 'install dashboards' It appears, if one has Evox and they choose to install UnleashX, the new dash files should overwrite the current ones and replace it and vice versa. I did that back and forth with UnleashX and Evox just to see what would happen. There didn't appear to be any permanent changes. True/False?

Installing Shadow-C, prevents viewing of C drive files. Last weekend I tried hitting the 'return to stock' button to see what'll happen.

I noticed the xbox still booted to unleash-x and didn't remove the softmod files, but C drive contents were visible. I hit 'shadow C-unleashx' to try and hide C drive contents again. Wen I went to UnleashX file manager after taking the disk out the C contents were visible.

Today I found some great trainers on UG gamer and FTP'd them to my xbox. I used XBMC installer 3.2.2 to install evox in order to play the trainers. After Evox install I hit 'open disk tray' took out the disk (while XBMC installer was still running), then simply clicked 'shutdown'. The xbox powered down with the drive still open.

I rebooted the xbox, but after the splash screen and still xbox image with 'Microsoft' below the xbox automatically rebooted, went to the still screen, with the still xbox logo, then rebooted itself again in an infinite loop.

If I shut down the xbox, reboot and popp in a game, xbox would play it. I decided to put back in XBMC installer 3.2.2 and install UnleashX again. Now I am having no problems.

Did I discover a bug in the XBMC installer disk, or just screw up something else, which caused the infinite reboot?

If it helps I can upload a quick video to demonstrate the infinite loop

Thanks for your insight

^^ yep, sounds familiar of a flaw i've had but nothing to do with XBMC installer!
what you described can be a fucked C:/ volume contents...
had it myself testing a program!
when i reset the console, that was it...reactor intro loop until i restored the C:/ volume from scratch using XBMC autoinstaller!
so far so good...all was well!
i can't speak for your personal experience but it appears as if you capitalised on the C:/ volume contents somehow fucking in vital files!
good thing you undid it and went about the installation the right way!
(it's NO fucking fun and a TERRIBLE feeling when things look fucked and semi-bricked....i won't be getting adventurous with the da$h ever again)
[edit]..... Razz couldn't resist the urge... Embarassed
^^ SPPV will surely see the laughs here... Wink

Ha ha can't beat monty python.

So does this open the door to posting clips from the Holy Grail or Life of Brian in every response to a thread? Smile

I'll see what SPPV says too.

Do you know which C files will need to get fixed or modified?

Thanks

^^ you don't have to take my word for anything, it's a PUBLIC thread and i responded as such, my experience (in relation to your observations) is as accurate as i recall!
posting a random video clip was something i decided to do out of the spare of the moment to inject a bit of levity here! (please DON'T question that) and i can't say i'd have any issues if others did it! (context of clip content/graphic, i WILL remove something "pushing" the envelope...so to speak)
.............
i can't remember the exact filenames to the da$h or which ones are modified by softmod but you can do a process of elimination...
create a clean unmodded C:/ volume content and copy it to another directory and do the same with other dash types (in their own respective directories) and compare the contents of each backed up C:/ volume directory against each other BEFORE you start borking around with the USED da$h files....simples! Razz (be it on your own head, you know the risks involved!)
have fun Cool

Ok sure that makes sense, just copy C drive contents elsewhere compare the contents sure.

As far as the vids go, obviously posting one's of an inappropriate nature spoils the fun of it.

Here goes my stab at it Smile

Its a good thing you dont live in a war zone, your like a blind guy who likes to go wandering in a mine field.

#1 going between Evox and Ux WILL NOT OVERWRITE. They use different file, to overrite would require the same files.

#2 By hitting return to stock when you had shadowc running it installed stock files on the visible C drive. If the shadow c didnt work hitting return to stock your XBOX wouldnt have booted to Ux it would be stock

#3 Because you installed shadowC nothing can touch the real c drive so makes your contnued messing moot.

#4 Instrctions are included for a reason. I even explain the visible C files in an on screen pop up when you first install ShadowC. But its obvious you just ignored it.

#5 Evox is not designed to work with the ShadowC, Hence the fact it installs Ux by default with the ShadowC

Youre in no position to just f#&@ around for the hell of it. This is what happens. And it forces me to waste time when I shouldnt have to. Do you stick your fingers in light sockets "To just see what happens"? Cause you seem to really like doing it with XBOX. Until you have a PC able to run AutoBuilder and are proficient with it you are leaving yourself wide open on your litle fact finding missions. Ive got so many vids on my channel that cover XBMC Installer, it would do you a great service to watch them. Way it is now your just playing Russian Roulette.

Simply put what happened was Evox didnt know where to look for XB1XDASH.xbe because its not on the C drive leaving you in a boot loop. And you dont need Evox for trainers, especialy if you have XBMC installed as it can run Evox and Xored trainers. If you want to switch to a new dash you will need to first hit disable shadowC let the XBOX reboot (its automatic TOUCH NOTHING) Then hit re-do softmod. You can now install any dash you want, if goig on a dash fact finding mission you WILL need to use the filemanager to delete some files since all 4 dashboards use different files. And just like on your PC when you copy files of a different name and size it wont overwrite. It requires identical files to overwrite. You will now have the evox config (evox.ini) the trainer folder and Evox skin folder on your E drive. Goig to Evox from Ux will leave the Ux config (Config.xml) items.xml and the Ux Skins folder on your E drive.

thanks SPPV for the breakdown and the extra info!
i get a bad gut feeling and you spell it out clear as day, much appreciated! Cool

LOL SPPV you sure like to tease me Sad

Actually I have two lives because my cousin gave me their xbox. My original one hasn't been fully modded Smile so I've got backup options bro Very Happy I'm an engineering student I like to take stuff apart, see the components and how they all fit together.

I chucked the evox.ini file and deleted its skins from the E drive. Anything else to chuck?

I've seen a lot of your troubleshooting posts. Usually someone does a bunch of crap and you say pop in XBMC Installer 3.2.2 because it's great for undoing whatever they did and putting in good files.

Actually I tried doing disable ShadowC, then return to stock. It went back to the M$ dash like you said it would. Thought I'd try it just for fun Very Happy

Put in my M$ mem card with splinter cell NTSC linux and SID 5.11 then did single boot softmod, standard for HD, unleash X. So now I know how to use your good SID installer instead of using version 2, which was the one on that old mem card I bought a month ago from a used game shop.

Then did shadow C-UnleashX on XBMC installer. Let it reboot, but realized I needed to have it disabled to install a new dash, since you said dashes install their stuff to C drive.

So I disabled shadow C, pressed ok to reboot. Then went to re-do softmod like you said.

Just went it appeared to be done it gave an error. The log file is attached.

What can I do?

Short memory eh? Did you forget already that when usin Re-do Softmod if you have an eeprom backup it will refuse to overwrite it, but softmod is still installed

No not short memory, just lack of sleep from studying, researching as much as I can on xbox modding, which makes retaining stuff difficult sometimes. Compared to what I saw in all of your XBMC installer videos, I now know waaaay more than I did a month ago.

I found the post from a month ago where you mentioned it and said it will install the softmod, but not delete the EEPROM backup. thanks

I understand now that evox expects to find XB1XDASH.xbe file in C drive, but with shadow C installed, it will prevent xbox from finding it and hence the boot loop.

Here's the thing that still confuses me, what is the purpose of each of these .xbe files (e.g. default.xbe, xboxdash.xbe, XB1XDASH.xbe)?
Just trying to understand which are essential for using a dash.

.XBE=.EXE NEVER mess with the xbe files, especialy ones on C drive or on the root of E drive or in E/Dashboard. Unless of course you want your XBOX to go on the fritz and require an HDD rebuild Laughing

The thing to keep in mind while great, XBMC Installer cant fix everything. And messing the xbe's on C drive will leave you in a spot where removing the HDD and hooking to a PC is your only option to fix it. Think of messing with xbe files like going into your Windows or MAC OSx installation folder and messing with files and deleting just to see what happens. Your far better off checking the tuts and posts here, posts over at Xtras and my vids to learn about XBOX than trying to do a cause and effect search. Once you have the ability to rebuild an HDD its not such a big issue, but right now you can basicaly leave yourself with a paper weight

I've never touched a .xbe file on the OEM hard drive. I understand that deleting one could brick the box.

This video was very informative though:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4RRum6Yqss&list=UUHY0q50zPyUd85LwSXVvdag&index=77

I've just been plying google to see if there was a page on HQ or XS giving a list of common .xbe files and explaining what they do. Usually XS has some older manuals or tuts explaining what things do (e.g. configmagic), even if they're slightly outdated, but I've had absolutely no luck finding any documentation from other hackers so far.

I don't want toask you about each one individually, you're busy. I prefer reading on my own anyways. I'm just wondering if the devs at Xbox-HQ or XS ever wrote a document explaining each important .xbe file's purpose that you know of. If not, I guess I'll just try and retain what I read from other forums.

XB1XDASH.xbe is the original MS Dash executeable, XBOXDASH.xbe is the softmod executeable, EVOXDASH.xbe is a dashboard executeable or shortcut to the executeable of XBMC as dash. Default are program executeables

Thanks for the informative and quick reply. That's great info to know.

So basically if I made an app, compiled with XDK or open XDK, my app would have its own folder with a "default.xbe" needed to run it? That is all apps people make (surreal 64, configmagic, coinops etc) all have their own respective "default.xbe" file?

It sounds like I should just go back to the ShadowC-UnleashX softmod, then to go install E drive apps and install XBMC that way for now until I get my upgraded 320GB HDD in the xbox. I'm assuming that given enough HDD space, I can install all the dashes as apps. true/false?

^^ installing extra da$hes to the E:/ volume?
..............
note: I'M SAYING FUCKALL IN RELATION TO WHAT SPPV STATED! IT'S CLEAR ENOUGH TO UNDERSTAND AND I'M NOT THROWING IN TO HELP YOU DEVIATE MORE THAN YOU ALREADY HAVE!
............
okay, YES you can add separate da$hes to E:/ volume (apps) but i'm not sure how you'd boot into them in terms of system reset/powerup! (as a primary da$h)
they work as their own entities as an app installed would!
i won't bother how to explain how to unpack the da$hes as you already know how to do this!
if you've got XBMC (or anything as an app) then you should know what the expanded directory in the APPS directory will look like...just put your "other" da$hes in that "apps" directory (as you did XBMC) and run it's xbe manually!
DON'T expect them to be visible as menu entries given their nature. (and i'm not sure if icons were ever designed for them)
if you have the official "dvd playback kit" for the xbox (ir remote and receiver) USING UNLEASHX, you can assign ANY xbe you want to the ir remote 0-9 keypad....10 shortcuts to 10 xbe's and can use secondary da$hes xbe (evox for one example) assign as ANY other xbe whether it's an app, emu or game xbe! (i couldn't get the normal pad to work with UNLX shortcuts but the ir remote is perfect for it)
just go into unleashx settings and poke around til you find "assign shortcuts" and you can take it from there!
my ir remote shortcut cfg is...
1, "XBMC" default.xbe = ir button 0
2. "EVOX" default.xbe = ir button 9
3, "DVD2xbox" default.xbe = ir button 8
4, "UNLEASXH softmod installer" default.xbe = ir button 1
................
that's it for now...i couldn't be arsed to assign a full ten...i didn't need it at the time anyway... Cool Razz Very Happy
[edit]...doesn't just have to be E:/ volume apps can go to..
if you have multiple volumes as a result of a larger hdd, you can also have the same DEFAULT directory locations on it,...(ie: G:/apps/) but as far as the apps/rom/emus are concerned, they can only exist in ONE location at a time or they'll be conflicts in listing! (if you have items in alien locations such as "F:/myshit/EVOX/" it WON'T clash/be visible as an entry simply because it's not at it's default location! (but a custom one instead)
