Does anyone know what the quality of Hitachi DVD drives are? Not just in terms of what media they can read, but durability and all that too.

The original Xbox did not have Hitachi DVD drives. I think you're looking for our sister site www.360-hq.com with this question. Log in with your same username and password that you used here to get a better response Smile

This isn't really a mod, but it didn't seem to go anywhere else…

Anywho, I picked up an Xbox over the weekend at Good Will because mine had been in need of a new DVD drive for a long time. It was only $17 and that was cheaper than anything I would find online, and if the drive didn't work then I could at least pull the fan and the bottom part of the case since mine was pretty fucked.

It had a manufacture date of 05 and a big old refurbished sticker on it which made me a little wary, but I figured if it had been fixed after being made in 05 odds were probably better that it was working. So when I get it home I pop it open and to my surprise there's a Hitachi drive in it. I'm not sure if this is uncommon or not, I've only ever heard of Samsung, Philips and Thompson drives. It works great, reads pretty beat up games a lot more reliably than any other Xbox drives I've seen. The tray is similar to a Thompson, but the cut out area is a lot wider and has little holes in the outer area.

So has anyone else run into this in an '05 Xbox or was this something Microsoft maybe started doing with refurbished drives?

I can snap some pics before I get the feet glued back on if anyone is interested.

My old Samsung drive is showing its age a bit. It's a good drive, but I think the laser is getting weaker. These Hitachi ones would not only be younger than all the other drives, but Hitachi make some quality stuff. If you got one of these, you are lucky.

Is it true that Xbox DVD drives are just plug and play?

Also, this Xbox that I got with a Hitachi DVD drive... The front of the DVD drive isn't flush with the front of the Xbox... It's slightly indented into the Xbox. I don't know if anybody's encountered this before and/or this shouldn't be of any concern. It's very slight, to the point if I were to take a picture of it, you would have a difficult time seeing it.

^^ YES!
it's true ALL original xbox's could have the dvd drives swapped out and replaced on the fly! if the replacement works, you're golden! Cool
as for the unit not sitting flush with the rest of the console, i've had that happen ONCE due to the chassis mount on the dvd drive being slightly different design to the one that was previously from the conole!
adjustment was required to get it to seat properly but in terms of a working drive replacement, it was all good! Smile Cool
[edit]...just the 360 dvd drives that needed "keying/binding" to the console it was targeted at!

Okay, yeah, here's the Hitachi DVD drive tray if anyone's interested.

It's in an original Xbox I got recently that was made in May 2005. My old Xbox that was made in October 2004, has a Philips DVD drive. I think it may be going bad. KOTOR cutscenes lag a little bit. Maybe someone can clarify whether that's the DVD drive's fault or the HDD's fault. I'm thinking about just switching the DVD drives between the two.

Really? I've never seen one. Does someone have a picture of one?

You can swap the DVD drives over no problem. So maybe start with that since you have nothing to lose by trying it.

!!! WARNING !!!
USE AT YOUR OWN RISK, I WILL NOT BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE! THE CHOICE IS YOURS!

i'm probably pointing out the status-quo here but have you cleaned the lens assembly on the drive unit?
the last xbox that was given to me couldn't read ANY optical disks for toffee! for all intents and purposes, the drive was fucked....or so i thought!
i removed the upper drive housing to reveal all the lens assembly/sled rails and the thing was CAKED to the nines in shit! Mad
so i cleaned out all the drive housing and the lens assembly by hand!
when i was left with the head/lens to clean, i used surgical spirit and an UNUSED glasses cloth and an unused matchstick!
1, fold glasses cloth over the clean flat end of a matchstick, bite the sulphur match head off first, you won't be needing it!
2, using a VERY SPARING amount of surgical spirit, apply a small drop to the folded glasses cloth that should be covering the match head! (the folded material should be a nice squashy pillow...you DON'T want the match stick poking through at all, it WILL scratch the lens)
3, with the surgical spirit on the folded glasses clot over the matchstick, WITH VERY MINIMAL PRESSURE EXERTED, clean the lens in a counter-clockwise fashion for thirty seconds (approximately) being as careful NOT to overshoot the lens groove! when done, LEAVE drive unit so the surgical spirit can evaporate then reassemble the console up to a working machine, keep lid housing off the console for now...if ll works...GOLDEN! if not, go with above poster's advice as it's true...you've fuckall to lose at this point!
Cool
if you have a CD drive lens cleaner (one NOT previously used on tech is preferable) give it a spin with a SLIGHT dab of ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL (may come with lens cleaner disk) or a slight dab of surgical spirit on the lens cleaning brushes and let the disk play for the duration...however long the lens cleaner disk plays out!
when done, give console ten minutes for vapors to evaporate and try again! (all of the above worked for me but i'm NOT you so.....USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!)
all the best! Very Happy
[edit]...i HATE typos! Mad (mistakes cost lives and tech) Embarassed

Here ya go, Info is slightly off since it says all 1.6 had it but it was just the 1.6c. Regular 1.6 and 1.6b shipped with Philips drives. Thats why it had the diffrent model # cause RAM i same as the b just the different DVD drive

http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/sep/EEpuEkpllZviIGdspV.php

Also there is 1 model of 1.0 that cant take any drive, they used a slightly different power connecter on em. I wasnt even aware of it until I went to build my Dell-Box then saw the power cord I had salvaged from my dead 1.0 wouldnt fit my Philips drive. When I checked the alive 1.0 I had the cord from it fit fine. So must have been 2 models but no revision # to differentiate them
