So, I got this big old block of an old Dell in my room and I have nothing really to do with it. The hard drive in it however, is a 80 (120?) gb drive that uses IDE.

Two things.
1. Will this fit and work correctly in an normal Xbox?
2. What is the the true size of 80gb and 120gb?

Hi Starstorm this is the guy from youtube directing you here.

For your post try to provide technical specifications of your computer by saying how much RAM it has, if it supports PATA and/or SATA hard drives.

Also saying what the brand of your desktop tower and monitor provides more detail for someone on here to answer.

If that hard drive disk you have came from your old computer, I'm guessing it'll have some of your computer's data on it. If you wanna use it in an xbox, its files are going to all get deleted probably just to give you a heads up.

In short when posting questions, the more detail the better.

Glad to see your on here!

From what you are saying, really I don't mind if the old computer loses original data, as at the moment it is just using up space in my room.
Here is some data from a "replacement" one on cputopia.
Quote:
- 160 (or whatever it is) GB Storage Capacity
- 7200 RPM
- 100 MB/s Data Transfer Rate
- IDE Interface
- 3.5-Inch Internal

So, yep, it's a PATAer. Don't know why it matters what the ram is, but I believe it's two 1gbs that make 2gb or something below that.

And for more (I think) there is the support page for dell (this computer has barely any resources for it as I feel)
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim2400/en/sm_en/specs.htm

Far as figuring if the HDD will work or not all you need is the HDD model #. Then click on HardDrives (its right below the scrolling topics list) and see if its lockable (dont despair if its not listed, we by no means have every lockable HDD listed) If it is lockable then it will work on all XBOX. If its not lockable it will only work on chipped/tsop xbox's. Far as formatted size goes a 120GB should be around 113GB and an 80GB should be around 75GB

Well, I don't know how to get the model number inside without screwing something up. I think it might work, just got to hope for the best. :/

Don't despair or give up Starstorm. It's simple.

Go to this link on hq:

http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/modules.php?name=Xbox_HardDrives

All you need to do is type in the brand of your hard drive in the search box under 'Xbox HardDrive Compatibility'.

It'll probably be a western digital or seagate one. Then look for your model number such as 'WD3200JBaa' or 'wd3200aajb'

My model I bought online was one or the other.

Now just do the same thing for your hard drive.

Unsure how to determine the brand and model number of the hard drive you have? Ask me and I'll explain how to.

Well, there isn't exactly a false size. Windows will probably say 74GB but it really means 74GiB - gibibytes. They are both correct (except Windows calls the gigabytes).

The model# will be prited on the top of the HDD like STDM5002 for example which is a Segate barricuda 500GB HDD. Then look in our database under eagate for a matcing model #

Nevermind, I'll just get a refurbished one for cheap, which has much more gigs that I need. A different site says that it works
http://xboxdrives.x-pec.com
So I'm just going to go that route. Rolling Eyes

I'd recommend that you just give the hard drive that you currently have a try. I've never ran into a hard drive that wouldn't lock before, but even if you did, you wouldn't be down anything by trying it out Smile

It's only 40gb.
I booted the old block today. Oh well.
