Hello Dudes and Dudettes! (I assume there's female modders here..)!
Anyway, as usual, I'm late to the party! I find myself here because I had found a Linksys DMA 2200 WME for $13.00 at a thrift store (stay with me, I know it's not an Xbox but, I'll get there!). I have never had any thing to do with home theater, just a Visio 37" LCD in the back room with satellite and DVD player.
So I hooks up the Linksys and make a media server out of an old desktop I had lying around and started playing with the Microslob Media Center. It was fun for awhile but I started looking around for other media extender software and found....XBMC! Well, after downloading that, I thought "This is a WAY better setup than WMC". XBMC has it's quirks but, it seems to be infinitely configurable with tons of add ons for it.
So, I'm reading up on the history of XBMC and find out it started with - the Xbox! Duh!!! So I start reading up on Xbox and Modding and exploits and ALL that good stuff! And, or course, I found you guys! I thought, I've got to get in on this - better late than never!
So, I started crusing FleaBay and I scored an Xbox for $36.00. No big deal except, while reading the description it stated that it was a "working Xbox...even the black thing on the front lights up". Black thing on the front? I looked at the pictures (there were only two and not that good) and I'm POSITIVE I saw an Xecuter 3 control panel on the left hand bottom corner of the front of the Xbox! Now, I don't know if they were playing dumb because they didn't know what the Xecuter was, or playing dumb because it doesn't work!
Anyway, It's mine and it's on it's way here! I've got my fingers crossed that the modchip is indeed there and working. If not and the Xbox is alive, I'll just have to softmod it.

Welcome to the site
If it has a modchip you'll be a lucky son of a gun. If it doesn't have a modchip or it doesn't work anymore, you can always TSOP the Xbox if it is a V1.0-1.5. However, if it's a V1.6 you'll either have to track down another mod chip or just softmod it. _________________

Thanks for the welcome!
I was never much into console gaming - I played mostly PC based games so I didn't ever know much about the Xbox, Play Stations and other neat consoles. It wasn't until I was looking into home theater and media centers that I found out how great the old Xboxs were, and still are!
I've read up on everything I can find out about the Xbox and modding, so my knowledge is limited! I've really got my fingers crossed that this Xbox is going to have a functioning modchip in it. this is what I saw in the picture that made me think that there was -
So I'll just wait until it gets here and see what I've got! As you said, even if it isn't or the chip is non-functioning, I've still got some options! _________________

Hello and welcome to the world of modding Xboxes. They are really good machines and if you get an Xbox with Xecuter 3 chip and front panel then I envy you. I have one Xbox with an X3 in but no front panel, only the dip switches. (See my Xbox)
Personally, I prefer the hard mods and TSOP but if you can't do that then I guess you will want a softmod. The problem with softmods is that you can't change the BIOS at all. If you have an X3 chip, get the X3 BIOS from the AID download and have a rocking time with your Xbox. Can you give us a link to that page? I'd like to look at what they said about it.
I'm not sure but wasn't there an old softmod called Pheonix BIOS Loader that loaded another BIOS?
If you want XBMC, got to www.xbmc4xbox.org/forum to get the latest revision. Make sure you don't get r31096 but r31095 because there are files missing in the newest build (hence why the build size is half that of 31095). The forums there are very active and helpful.

Oh wow just saw the picture. You have the dip switches like me. Well, going to have if that picture is correct. I'll give you a little tut on how to get the Xbox flashed with a proper BIOS.
Go to the switches on your Xbox and turn them all to the OFF state.
Turn on the Xbox by pressing both the power and eject at almost the same time. Then look at the switches and take note of the colour of the X. If it is purple and then turns blue, you are in business.
Then, enable network flashing. Make sure you have the Xbox connected to your network when you do this.
An IP address will appear on the screen. It should be sometime like 192.168.x.x
Go to that IP with your computer's browser.
It should connect quickly and it will allow you to browse your computer for a BIOS.
Select the X3 BIOS you got with the AID Lite installer (go to the top of this site and click the AIDeluxe.com link where you can download AID Lite)

I might have misspoke myself about the front panel. I've seen that Xecuter made a complete front replacement panel for the Xbox - unfortunately that is NOT the one I was talking about (see, I told you I was new at this!).The one that I'm getting just showed the dip switches and HD and LAN activity lights! Here's the description -
"Here we have a Nice Used Original XBOX Sytem. It comes working with 2 Xbox Controllers. It has the TV and AV Cords...It also has a Black Thing on the Front that lights up when powered on (See Picture)...This is a nice working original xbox system..See Pictures....You are Bidding on Exactly what is in the picture...Thanks " _________________

Yes, the plus16 is made for 1.6 and 1.6b models of Xbox. They have different video encoders and overscan abilities. Both of my Xboxes are 1.6 and they are pretty much the same as the other models. They are so far not capable of VGA output but I wouldn't worry about that.

Yeah, I didn't know quite what to make of that either. Okay then, it sounds like I'm good to go - just have to wait for the Xbox to get here.

No, VGA output is a mod that involves modding the Xbox video connector with capacitors, resistors and other stuff I don't even know about which if you get wrong could screw up your Xbox forever. The only reason the 1.6 models don't have VGA is because nobody knows exactly how the XCALIBUR video encoder chip works and Microsoft haven't spilled the beans after all these years.
That is what I don't really understand about MS. They see in the news about their software and hardware getting hacked and they turn a blind eye to it. I really wish they would tell us how to address extra RAM over the GPU. Then, we could install the extra RAM and run all of our apps with a simple patch that makes them able to access upgraded memory banks (the 128MB RAM mod is super extreme and shouldn't be attempted by the inexperienced). If I had an hour with Bill Gates I'd have a lot to talk about

There is something I forgot to tell you.
If you get hooked on a game (which is not so likely as you say you want Xbox for the media center), the you can use Xlink Kai to play against other people around the world on system link games. Xlink Kai is a program you run on your computer that accesses your console to tunnel the system link and make the system think the other players in the world are on your network. I'm running Kai and my XTag is the same as here.

Oh, I got a feeling I'll be gaming too! The Xbox is too good a system to let that option go to waste. Very interesting about the VGA and the extra RAM over the GPU would be an awesome hack!
I don't know enough to ask any really intelligent questions right now so I'll wait until I get my system and you get back from holiday! _________________

Once I get back, I'll make a zip file of lots of awesome applications for the Xbox that are really useful but could also mess it up if you do it wrong.
These are some of the things you can do with apps:
Browse the interwebs (very basic, no flash, no java, basic javascript, no CSS but it works)
Copy games to your HDD
Upgrade the size of your HDD (really awesome mod and easy to do with an X3 BIOS)
Emulate other gaming systems and arcade machines
Change your video region (might be required if you want high def)

If he has AID already, he will be able to install all of these programs already.
To be honest, really the only apps that are worthwhile to have are DVD2Xbox and Configmagic. Otherwise, the rest of the apps are personal taste. Personally, I only run those two apps, UnleashX and a few emulators on all of my Xboxes. _________________
