Hey guys, I recently bought a softmodded Xbox from Kijiji. Works great and I decided to attempt the Hard Drive Upgrade. I have a Western Digital 80GB Mdl: WD800JB-000JJCD.
I ftp'd into my box, copied the contents of my C: and E: and my eeprom.bin backup. Popped those into the appropriate folders in xboxhdm. The iso was listed as too big to burn so I deleted my Emulators from E\Emulators and the XBMC skins I wasn't using from E\Apps\XBMC\skins leaving, of course, Project Mayhem III which is the skin I use.
I burnt the disc, ran xboxhdm, built the HDD from scratch, then locked the drive successfully. Popped the drive into my Xbox and booted it up.
Xbox booted fine...to the regular (non-modded) M$ dashboard but not to XBMC... What did I do wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is a tough problem to google and find any help on!

You will need to remod the xbox, check out my HDD tutorial whether you use SID or Ndure you will need to do the same thing (a few cosmetic differences) as I do in my video. Hope this helps
Ah, thanks, I figured as much! I'll totally check out those videos and give it a shot.
Question, what happened to all the files/directories/partitions etc that were put on the xbox via the linux disc I built? Are those lost space? Will re-modding the xbox recover them/make them visible or will it just clean the Hard drive off completely like formatting it?
Also, just out of curiousity, what causes this particular problem? Or is this normal?
Thanks again, your help is muchly appreciated!

This is normal, Ive never done an HDD build where Ive been able to just go in and turn the mod back on, Ive always had to do the reinstall. All the partitions are still there doing the mod will just unlock your F drive, backup your C drive and EEPROM, and install the softmod/dashboard which takes almost no space on the E drive. I always barebones the XBOX before even copying the drives, I delete all games, apps and emus to make the build quicker, but if you choose to leave emus etc they will be on the E drive like before

Hi rorysl,
Let us know how you go, and feel free to come back and contribute as you learn more and more about your xbox 1. That's all we ask in return on HQ is that you take the time to come by and maybe pass on some info where you can.
enjoy the sites and goodluck on your modding adventures. Sounds like you have it pretty easy. just a simple reinstall of your softmod and all your files and stuff should still be there depending on what method you choose. (god there are a few)..

Youve just gotten soft
Ive been doing softmod for almost a decade now so its almost second nature once youve got the tricks down its gravy. For me its just learning these other programs like AID and Chimp since Ive always used Ndure and XBOXHDM, but if youve used one youve used em all. Not includeing the time it takes to FTP the backup or to reload emus I can switch out a drive in under 7 minutes, same with a soft mod so to me its not such a big deal. I havent owned a flashed XBOX in about 5 years so not having to lock the drive is almost a foreign concept to me.
Ever since NK came out the lines between flashed, chipped and softmodded have really been blurred since you can achieve almost the same result with each. Add to that being able to switch out the XBOX DVD drive for a flashed Philips drive and virtualy all the protections M$ sought to put in place have been negated

Hey guys!
Thanks for the warm welcome, it's much appreciated. I currently have three Xboxes. One is modded, although I had it done awhile ago and I'm not sure what chip is sitting in the thing! It's great, with a 300gig hard drive. A second I softmodded myself with SID50 and seems to be working good, stock hard drive in that one.
So...I just sat down to install the softmod and I ran into a bit of trouble....
Like I said above, my Xbox is registering the new hard drive and booting as if it were an unmodded box. I have a flash drive that the Xbox recognizes as a memory card with SID50 installer and Splinter Cell Save. However, when I select them I am only given the option to delete not copy to the HDD. I can access the HDD through the M$ dash (and can see that the original modder modded it with SID40). Any thoughts on why there's no copy option presented for me?

2 possible reasons
1- the files you wish to copy are allready on the HDD
2- you are on the big icon if you push right to the small one it should give you the copy option.
Before copying on the game saves make sure to put in the game used to softmod it, remove the softmod, when it asks tell it to restore from HDD, reboot go into memory and delete everything other than valid XBOX game gamesaves. This means if there are exploit game saves on there delete them. Copy the saves on from your mem card and remod it. Pretty much follow part 2 of the tutorial I linked to above

Ok, I'm still running into some major problems.
The root of them, I think, is that the guy who originally softmodded this box used SID40 and, I think, Mechassault as his game of choice. I checked this by accessing my new hard drive on the M$ dashboard. SID40 Installer and a Mechassault save were present. There was a Splinter Cell file but there were no saves present and I think that exists merely from me booting up Splinter Cell at some point on the retail drive that built this one. The problem here, I think, is I am using SID50 and Splinter Cell to softmod.
So I pop in SC, load the Linux Checkpoint save, get to the SID50 menu. Backup my eeprom (not sure if necessary but I figured I'd do it anyway). Try to backup my M$ dash, this fails as it says a softmod is found. Next I attempted to remove the softmod which rebooted the Xbox, automatically loading SC again. I reboot without SC and the box boots to a 13 Service required, call customer support which, I understand, is no dashboard found.
Not sure if I'm just making a simple mistake. It seems, based on your last post, that I need to remove the softmod the way it was put on by the previous owner. Based on that, a few questions:
1) Does SID40 need to be removed by SID40 or can I use SID50 to remove it?
2) Do I need to use MechAssault, if that was the original game used, or will Splinter Cell work fine, providing I copy the Linux Checkpoints save to the box.
I figure one or the other of these is my problem. Any thoughts before I start scouring the local gameshops for Mechassault?
Sorry for all the questions -- trial and error for me is a little tough since the only PC I have access to that will build/lock my hard drive is across town at my parents!!!!

If you dont have Mechassault to boot the softmod menu you have 2 choices.
1. Use AID (if you can boot it) to remove the softmod, or if it fails to overwrite the C drive with Virgin Dash files (5960)
2. Get the eeprom if you can, build an XBOXHDM disc with 5960 dash files in the c folder and eeprom in the eeprom folder, first boot option 3 and unlock the drive, reboot pick option 1, go in wipe the drive, copy virgin dash from disc to c drive, reboot and lock the drive

I must admit that sounds pretty complicated! I managed to hound a bunch of ebay sellers to check version numbers on MechAssault and got the correct version for 5 or 6 bucks as I couldn't find one locally at all. In the meantime I rebuilt the hdd for the Xbox I softmodded myself and it seems to be working great. Thanks again for all the help! I may come looking again once I receive MechAssault.....
