Ive done a little checking into your problem and from what I can find it appears you used the proper method for getting a SATA to work in an xbox. I came across this over at the Scene
This is my first post here, but I have been messing with xboxen since virtually day one. I have never seen a definitive post on the net about whether this particular upgrade is doable and exactly what hardware will work, so since I just managed to accomplish it I thought posting my details might help others out.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
1. SATA harddrive. I assume there are other drives that will work as well, but I chose to use a Western Digital Caviar GP WD10EACS 1TB. It proved to be lockable so it will work for either modchip users or those with softmods. It is also very quite and runs quite cool to the touch. Regardless, you will need LBA48 support in your bios or a softmod which supports it such as nkpatcher (I use nkpatcher 11).
2. SATA to IDE adapter. Again, there may be other adapters that work, but I know this one does: SABRENT SBT-STDB IDE Ultra ATA-100/133 to SATA Port Mini Converter
Thats it really. I wont bother with a step by step as no trickery is required, the basic howtos for a harddrive upgrade will work fine. I used xboxhdm v1.9 and followed the normal procedure which can be found on this site. I used xbpartitioner and chose to split the free space across F and G using 32KB clusters. I ended up with 2 496GB partitions, and have completely filled up one of them with no corruption issues.
Happy upgrading!

But it appears from what Ive read from others who have done it that it can lead to ghosting and data corruption. The new version of XBOXHDM is supposed to natively support SATA so I would assume that whatever bugs in 1.9 that caused the corruption issues have been fixed. If you still have access to the EEPROM file, perhaps try the manual code generation and MSDOS to unlock it and try a rebuild with the new version.

The bad part here is that a SATA drive will not work with an XBOX 1. The XBOX 1 only has an IDE or PATA connection on it. There is a POSSIBILITY and i caps it because im not going to promise it will work. There is an adapter that will allow your HDD to connect to a PATA connection even if it is a SATA HDD. I will NOT promise this works as i have never tried it. If anyone has tried this and got it to work, please post if you read this and let us know!!! _________________ Hotswap Tutorial|FTP Tutorial|HyperX Flashing Tutorial

thank you both.
i have the sata adapters and drives.
1, 160g
1, 250g
1, 500g
1, 1tb
the 160 i did a create new drive and that will boot to ms dash but fails when i try the softmod.
the 250 is now unlockable - toast
the 500 will boot to the xbmc once in a blue moon, otherwise i get an error 9.
the 1tb i will not touch until i get this figured out.
now, all of these were done with xboxhdm1.9 .
with sppv's info, i will try this with the 2.1 or 2.2 or what ever they are calling it now.
with the softmod, does it actually flash the bios?
with aid, there is a huge list of bios's, what would be a good one?
if so, can i flash it using my old ide drive, make a new sata drive using xboxhdm2 and then do the softmod install?
alright, thats enough for now.
TIA!!!

I usualy leave the softmod in place when I do an upgrade, I just delete all the apps, emus and games before FTPing C, E and EEPROM.bin over to the linux folders, I dont think it makes a difference as far as the upgrade working or not just means less stuff to copy when building the drive. Also if its a drive thats already been used XBOXHDM will format it before copying the partition table so if there are any mod files on it they will be wiped in the first step. If it is a used drive you will need to unlock it before attempting to write the partition table or copy the C and E to the HDD. Just pick option 3 unlock and reboot then follow the normal procedure for building a drive. Ive got some video tutorials here which may help you depending on how familiar you are with this process.
i just want to make it easy for others that are looking to try this.
