I have been using SID 5.1 to soft mod xboxes for about a year now. I have done a couple of dozen of them. Today I ran across a problem I haven;t seen before

The xbox I bought has previously been soft modded using Sid 4 and has XBMC as the dash. I wanted to uninstall the mod, take it back to the MS load, then run SID 5 on it using the Mech Assault exploit.

I did some investigation and found information that said all I needed to do was to delete all files from C: and copy C: drive from an MS backup. I did this, rebooted and found myself in the std MS program. I preceeded to delete all the previous game saves, copied the 2 required files to the hard disk.

I then ran mech Assault, and ran the Linux program. At this point, a black screen appears and never goes any further.

One additional fact that might be a clue, when I first fired up the xbox, the initial screen was different. It has the name and phone number of a soft mod outfit.

Luckily I am working on a copy of the original drive since I was worried about doing something wrong. I can start over as many times as required.

So, is my approach wrong? Should I try something different? Is the custom start up screen a clue as to why this isn't working right?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Did you use a virtual C drive when you installed the first softmod?

If yes then you need to unmount that before you can do anything.

Personaly I found the best way to stock a xbox is to use Slayers/Ultimate Boot Disc 4, or to use XBOXHDM and a set of virgin dash files. The XBOXHDM works quite well when the other choices fail, also personaly I wouldnt try to restore it using a backup off the HDD since you never know what was done by the previous modder

That's one of the problems. This box was soft modded when I bought it. I have no idea whether they used a virtual C; drive. (Is there a way to tell?)

I will Try using the SID 5 disk and use the unmount C: option and see if that works.

I was hoping to use a tool that I was familiar with rather than learning a new one. I will take a look at both options you suggest.

I'm certain that the MS backup I'm using is good. I made a copy of one from a box that had never been modded previously. Thanks

XBOXHDM is a little tricky but the other one I mentioned is a cake walk just throw in the disc and click on restore msdash and it will overwrite the Cdrive with virgin 5960 dash

there was mention of a virtual C; drive. Will the slayer disk take care of that.

I was able to delete all the file on C and reboot into the std MS dash before. It wasn't unitl I tried to run the Mech assault install that I had a problem

I guess slayer will but i know that SID 5.1 will do it for sure, it should be in the softmod options.
