I tried doing the x clamp fix once before but the xbox I had gotten then was dropped down a flight of stairs so overheating turned out to not be the issue.
I recently bought a rrod repair xbox from a coworker. He got it from his cousin for free. It had 3 light rrod. Brought it to a guy and paid $75 for x clamp fix and a small fan added to the cpu heatsink. Ended up not using it and sold it to me for $50 with power cord and video cable
I had a 20gb HDD from upgrading mine to 120gb and threw in a wireless controller and gave it to my brother for his birthday.
He used it for a week or so and it got a 2 light rrod. It would work normally for a couple or a few minutes, then turn off and flash a 2 light rrod.
I just now got around to opening it last night. I noticed that the SOB that put the extra fan in cut the copper heat pipe flush from the gpu heatsink so he could fit the fan on the cpu heatsink. I didnt think too too much of it because the original gpu heatsinks were small one piece like that.
I took both heatsinks off and redid the arctic 5 thermal paste since I had some from my previous failed attempt. Started it up. Ran for a few minutes on the dashboard, then rrod'd. I felt the gpu heatsink and it was almost hot enough I didnt want to touch it. I took the dvd to the side and took the aftermarket fan and held it over what was left of the gpu heatsink and it ran on the dashboard like that for 20 minutes. I got bored of holding it so turned the xbox off.
I found a 1st gen cpu heatsink and 2nd gen gpu heatsink on ebay for $15 shipped and it should be here within a week. I will see if the gpu heatsink alone will fix it.
Im sure this has been asked many times before but is the 1st gen or 2nd gen cpu heat sink better at cooling? The 1st gen is made of steel which cools off slower but has a copper heat pipe. The 2nd gen is made of aluminum which cools off to the air much faster but with no heat pipe, so Im not sure which one is better
Also, Im thinking of replacing the back oem fans with either a talismoon nitro fan or an xcm high speed air cooler, and Im thinking of putting an xcm core cooler v2 on.
Can I use a talismoon nitro with an xcm core cooler v2 without having to make any custom harnesses or anything? Or do I have to use both xcm kits if I want to make it simple on myself? Does anyone know if the xcm or talismoon rear fan is better at cooling off?
Is there anything said to be the best overall mod to a 360 without having to do anything radical like modifying the outside case or mounting the dvd drive externally?
