Hey hi guys im just wondering if anybody can shed some light on this for me as im trying to do a comparison between these two methods of modifications.

What can a chipped console do that a softmoded console cant? or are they pretty much exactly the same? also which method better?

Cheers and thanks in advance!

As far as i know, they do the same thing. The difference is the price and the difficulty. Softmods are free as long as you have the exploit game. Modchips will cost you some money. With a softmod, if you mess up, you could wipe your harddrive clean. With a modchip, if you have to solder it, then you could fry your xbox. If you don't have to solder it, then it will be easy. Now this is where the big difference comes in. If you want to upgrade your xbox with a bigger harddrive, doing it with a softmod takes a while and it is kind of hard, however, if you have a modchip it is as easy as swapping the drives and telling the xbox to format the drive. That's all i know so guys, feel free to add on or correct me.

With a chip you can upgrade your drive to a bigger one without worrying about whether or not it will lock. I personally prefer a chipped box, although I have used softmods for a long period of time with no problems.

You can run without a dvd drive on a chipped box, whereas to do that with a softmod box you have to keep the electronics from the drive.

The two boxes I have now, one is chipped and the other is tsop'd. If you can't make up your mind on what to do, just softmod it for now and you can always tsop or chip it later.

The guys here are right at all points and the difference is hours, the hdd swap and repair of any errors on a chip box is a few minutes ware the softmod is up to a few hours to repair and you got to keep your eeprom back up on your PC incase the softmod fails.

If you can solder even a little i would go for the chip since you will be better off in the long run. Wink

Hmm.. so is it basically only the price and difficulty which separates the two.?

Is there any real major advantages/disadvantages to be had aside from whats already been mentioned between the two? ie performance wise, reliability, software etc etc...

I have never had a modchip, but with a softmod, my softmod has gone all wacko a few times on me and it deleted my original msdash, but i can get that back and the problems i had were easily fixable.

Performance wise the only thing you can do on a chip that a softmod can't is add more RAM. With a chip you can have up to 128MB of RAM, while a softmod can only have 64 MB.

This RAM won't help unless your running linux or an app that supports 128 MB. In games there won't be a difference since the game is coded for 64MB of RAM.
