First off... I just purchased an XBOX on Ebay.... (whos buying these things?) lol... sry.. anyway... I noticed many places showing media players, emulators, and other aplications.... So i want to use my xbox to play some of my old 64 games, play mp3s?, and homebrew games... I have read a little bit on how to do this but I am still a little weary on what the exact capabilities are... if i was to soft mod and install linux what are my exact limitations on Xbox live... also what are the limitations on hard drives... i currently have an external hard drive that connects via USB or ethernet... will this work... if not what are my options on hard drives? Finally i was also wondering if there was a way to use my computers wireless connection to connect to the XBOX for XBOX live? or anything else i may be able to use on the net... ANY INFORMATION will be greatly appreciated... THNX

If you mod you your xbox you just need to make sure you do a dual boot softmod. So that you can boot to both the modded dash and the stock dash for xbox live play. Also, you don't need linux on the xbox to play emulators and stuff. Linux only allows you to go online with your xbox, and it's really slow, so it's hardly even worth it.

As for getting on xbox live with wireless you would have to buy on of the third party wireless adapters built for the old xbox. I don't think anyone sells these anymore since the xbox is last gen, but I'm sure you could find a second hand one somewhere.

You can use external hard drives but it takes a lot of modding and the transfer speeds aren't nearly as good. It is a much better idea to buy an intenet IDE drive if you don't already have one and put it in the xbox. Right now you can put any size up to 2 TB in the xbox.

Hi tinitimmah,

Good old darth knows his stuff.. Smile
You won't want to bother with installing linux.

Just look into Auto Installer Deluxe (http://www.aideluxe.com) which is a HQ program for our members to help them repair and install their own xboxes. Once you get the AID or SID you can burn it to a DVD-R use it to format, install dashboards, media centers and emulators..

Do some reading and you won't regret it.. If you have probs and need hands on just come back and we will all do our best to teach you how to do it yourself.

The Xbox 1 is a really great media center and i have a custom modded one for my car lol..

anyway, sorry for rambling as always chat with you l8r guys! Smile

cheers,

hobbs

I believe (darth, you might want to correct me on this), going xbox live is no longer an option with softmod, you need a mod chip with a switch to disable the chip so you do not get banned.
There is a nice cheap wireless adapter for the 360 made by pelican. You set it up on your home computer and then just plug the ethernet cable from your xbox to the wireless adapter (it's really a wireless access point), and you're good to go. Easy to find on e-bay. I bought two for $25 canadian Smile
Use the A.I.D. disk and update it if needed and you have all the things needed except the ROM's, which is not discussed here but can be found easily.
Most don't realise it, but most N64 games are choppy unless you do a memory upgrade to 128mb. Same goes for MAME games as well.
Happy modding, and let us know if you need any help.
Delta

I'm fairly sure softmod is still an option. My friend goes on it with a dual boot and he is still not banned, and I haven't heard of anyone getting banned with a dual boot softmod as of yet.

Since a dual boot softmod is the exact same thing as turning off a mod chip.

First off I want to state I am not disagreeing with anything stated here this is just my opinion and answer to your question. 1st Xbox Media Center is an amazing piece of software I would highly recommend using it as an application or like I do as my dashboard. It has tons of great features it will allow you to play your homebrew, emulators, XBox games, movies, and mp3's and it looks cool. head over here http://217.118.215.116/ to grab the latest version of XBMC. 2nd most emulators work quite well from my experiance with the current 64mb of ram that comes stock you can actually play most N64 games pretty smoothly if you use the Surreal 64 XXX Community Edition without the patch, that way you can specify how much ram you use on each individual game it really helps, it's like a supped up version of the Surreal 64 1.0. here's some performance settings for Surreal 64 http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?s=&showtopic=213841 As for MAME (Arcade) I don't know much about it I don't use it, but from what I hear some games run smooth most don't because of the massive ram requirement upgrading your ram to 128mb will pretty much fix all N64 games but it will not fix 100% of MAME games from what I hear. At any rate you can hit google and search for Auto Xbins download it, run it, and you will automatically log in to xbins via irc to donwload any of these programs up to date it's your best bet for up to date emulators, homebrew, and applications. 3rd As for modding I recommend using a chip if you can afford it it's just easier in the long run, I use Xecuter 3/CE exclusivly as I have had perfect luck with everyone I have ever used nothing bad to say whatsoever. If your going to Softmod I recommend grabing the latest SID 5.x (Softmod Installer Deluxe) Which is a huge part of the xbox channel on this site, just search through the forums and do some research on it here http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/forum4.html. As stated above somewhere installing Linux would be pretty foolish, don't do it unless you know what your doing and need it for some strange reason.
4th I didn't know that anyone used Xbox Live on the old Xbox anymore but as long as you Dual boot with SID or Disable your modchip and have no modded files on C or E partitions i believe your fine, with SID it installs a shadow C drive so I guess that would be ok just keep your Emulators, Apps, etc on F or G. 5th As stated currently 2.2TB is the max you can put in as of now. With a chip like X3 you can set up a good working hard drive up to 500GB I believe with out losing data, (500GB split between 2 partitions F and G) Above that ie 500GBs you need to format F and G 32k Clusters which can be done with the newest XBpartitioner 1.1 which you can grab at XBins as well. As for upgrading the Hard Drive with a softmod it's kind of a pain in the ass or at least it was the last time I did one but that was a while back im not the one to talk to about that. As for the external Hard Drive i think you can use the USB cable if you make a USB adapter and format the Hard Drive like a memory card which you could access for sure with XBMC I do it with a 4GB Flash Drive all the time to test things, I would show up as partition J or K or something depending which controller port you use, but im not sure how big it can be since technically it's a memory card to the xbox. As for the ethernet cable for the Hard Drive not unless the Hard Drive was part of a shared network. Also all new Hard Drives are SATA so if you use a new one you need a SATA - IDE adapter you can get them on ebay, or newegg just search for it. 6th and final yes you can use wireless with you xbox, you just need a wireless adapter http://www.smarthome.com/images/6307giside1big.jpg or http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v733/GoHerd35/WirelessRouter.jpg basically ethernet cable from your xbox to the adapter from there wireless to you wireless router if you have one then you can FTP to your modded box to move files back and forth and you can have internet access for you box just make sure to use DHCP. I think that covers everything LOL if you still have any questions feel free to ask.
