I'm new to the Xbox scene and have had a virgin never used console sitting waiting for attention for the last couple of years (been occupied with the PSP and PS2 mods). Now i've finally decided to have a go at modding the thing i've done an awful lot of reading but come to no definite conclusion...

Firstly i have all the soft mod hardware (ARMax, 8Mb MC and Splinter Cell). It seems that the two main ways to softmod are Krayzie's ndure or DJB's SID. However, SID appears to get short shrift by many and i've been told ndure and CASH is the way to go....but no-one can elaborate on the differences between the two exploits and why i'd opt for one or the other.

What do i opt for SID 5.01 and then AID 4.40, or ndure and CASH? What are the differences between ndure and SID and would CASH be a better option than AID?

Sorry if this is noobish and documented elsewhere (believe me i've looked) but i'd like a little guidance and information so i can learn something and make an informed choice on the best path to take to fully unlock my Xbox. COming from so little knowledge it's difficult to build a foundation on which to work. (Once i've done this i'm going to buy a larger HDD too! )

I feel like asking on this forum i'm liable to get partisan replies but that's fine so long as they're well reasoned!

Hello,
I cant tell you the specific differences between Krayzies and SID, but ive used them both without any problems. Ive heard SID being bashed on other forums for reasons unknown, myself and the majority of users on this forum use SID and rarely encounter any problems ...... If your unfortunate and do encounter a problem, this is the place to come for the answers.

CASH is a few years old now, and is used to upgrade from older softmods, it has a few Dashes and Apps but its not in the same league as AID - AID has everything, Hardmod support, Softmod support, its development is still active so you get the latest builds of the stuff it contains.

Its your choice whatever soft mod you use, either SID or Krayzies - both are reliable.
As for an installer to follow up the softmod, you cant go wrong with AID (believe me, out of all the Auto Installers ive used like Slayers, Little jonnys, Firef*ckers, Zzk, Aweirdguys, console disc and BoA - AID is by far the most comprehensive)

Thanks for the reply....That's good news about AID since i've just finished getting the 4.40 Installer and the 4.41 Update! I'd rather not see ~2Gb of stuff go to waste so i'm glad to hear it's a good option. (Although scarily i've just this second read of AID not being very compatible with soft mods and creating problems! WHat shoudln't AID be used for with a soft mod?)

I'm just confused why one would be a better choice....i've read of the problems caused when redoing the exploit if one or other of these apps is used and was curious how the end result of the install differed if these programs are a bit like scaffolding to get everything in the right place. People say that SID offers more options but i'm not seeing all the things that i should be wary of. Are some things offered in one package but not the other?

I'm familiar with DJB from his Pandora Deluxe, and whilst it came about long after i personally needed it, it acts as a stamp of getting a nice thorough app and is why i wanted to clarify why people seem to recommend Krayzie's tool over SID.

OK...more reading...seems that Krayzie's creates a shadowc backup, and whilst i see tha SID can backup C in the installation process too is it the same thing? Also what am i missing out on from the Extra pack included in Krayzie's installer?

I've never used Krazyies in my life.

I've modded about 15 xboxes with SID. Not a single problem. Follow up with AID works great.

Here`s a little info on the `Extras`

Quote:

The Extras folder/disc:
***********************

The Extras can be used to further customize your softmod like dualboots, led, control and video modes. It also offers a load
of other features like formatting, dashboard management (backup/test/replace/restore) and professional mode (to use apps
without virtual eeprom/C partition). Since many features of the extras are not meant to be messed around with you will be
asked for a passcode on different occasions. This ensures little children and other people to not go in the Extras menu.
(All passcodes are button sequence: AYBX)
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I will not explain all features here because that just would be too much. Every option has an explaining text box as soon as
you take it and asks you to proceed. If you don't like it just select no.

This Extras feature can be used in two ways:
-copy the Extras folder to E:\Apps (no other location) and launch it via the dashboard.
To launch extras just select "Krayzie Extras" out of the Apps menu of your dashboard. This will get you to a pre-Extras menu
in where you can launch the Extras menu (passcode protected) or use the format options (also passcode protected).

-Make an xbox iso out of the folder and burn it to disc and run it on the xbox.
You could do this if you don't have ftp to copy the Extras folder to E:\Apps or want to make your personal autoinstaller
disc that copies your own personal Apps or Emulators. In that case just fill the Apps and Emulators folders in the Extras
folder with your favourite Apps and Emulators before you burn it. Then when you run the disc you can select the "copy
Apps/Emulators from disc" option.
To launch the Extras menu you NEED to copy the Extras to HD first (using the "Copy Extras from disc" option).

In this pre-Extras menu you can also launch the save for the right exploitable game. This might be easy if you want to enter
the saves menu and don't feel like actually putting in the disc. This feature is also passcode protected.

Thanks for all the help user1...i'd read that but as ever it's annoyingly light on details, especially concerning the Professional Menu (which is surprising in a way since you'd have expected the most dangerous area to have some documentation). Suppose my next mission is to find some sort of guide for that pack!

I'm feeling pretty informed now so i'm just going to go ahead and do the soft-mod. For reference if anyone else in the future stumbles across this topic and is in a similar position (probably unlikely)....

First - Hello from the past!
From a noobs perspective -

As far as i can see on SID vs Krayzie's installer, the differences amount to the fact that Krayzies is a linear process which cannot deviate and will give everyone who uses it an almost identical end result. You don't get dual boot off the bat nor LED controls, whereas SID offers these things. SID is a menu driven installer which puts the user in control and offers the aforementioned customisations immediately. However by use of the Extra's pack Krayzie's installers install can be easily customised to the same level, and in fact there may be a couple more options in that add-on package, but for most it's redundant.

As i see it Krayzie's could be described as safer if you've failed to do any reading at all, but unless you really screw around with SID there's very little difference, although with SID you would get a more complete and functional immediate end result (but easily duplicated in the alternative install).

I'm assuming that each installer leaves fingerprints in different places so that's why it's necessary to know which one you used for future softmod use. When later installs may take place if the initial mod hasn't been completely removed i'm guessing these fingerprints cause issues.

Summary - Use whichever just read up a bit on what you actually want. How's that sound from someone who started looking into this about 5 days ago?
