is there a generic usb gamepad driver for the xbox? If so one would be able to use just about any usb gamepad dongle like the nes retoport or snes retro port or any usb gamepad for that matter. Or would it be possibly to port some generic drivers to the xbox?

You can put a usb port in the controller socket so you can use a keyboard and mouse.

http://www.instructables.com/id/E4J64OXKGNEY95VIUD/ Go here to find out what is what on the controller memory card holder. And yes his green and white wire are backwards... so keep that in mind... the easier one to do is the back mem card holder.. or you can order one but it is much easier to make one yourself!!

that was assumed as common knowledge by my question. I have done some research and because i am not good enough at programming have determined a method to build a hardware mod. i have an idea for a controller box that would allow any controllers that use serial communication or parallel communication to be plugged into this box and translated into keyboard strokes.

Goal of project- be able to use unmodified gamepads to work with the xbox

the nes uses an 8 bit serial protocol that can be converted to parallel via a serial to parallel rs chip:
http://focus.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/sn74als164a.pdf
http://www.mit.edu/~tarvizo/nes-controller.html

nes d flipflop latch chip
http://www.fairchildsemi.com/ds/CD/CD4021BC.pdf

once converted to parallel you can simply apply all the q outputs to this hardware hack:
http://gmame.wordpress.com/2008/01/18/keyboard-hacking/

being a keyboard has 100+ outputs you could use one keyboard for many controllers

the snes controller also uses a serial communication protocol specifically 16 bits which could be met by using two sn74als164a cmos chips in series
http://www.repairfaq.org/REPAIR/F_SNES.html

the Atari and Sega gen uses a parallel protocol so without modification could be applied to the keyboard mod

the xbox would read the gamepad input as keyboard keystrokes thus being able to be mapped in games and emulators.

other non-digital communication protocols could be adapted easily

I apologize for the unorganized thoughts this is an idea in motion and i hope to write a guide detailing the procedure.

In short i hope in enable the use of many types of classic controllers without modification.

any help or ideas would be much appreciated thanks.

http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-101.html Also if you have an extra controller you can use this way... (just the first two paragraphs it this tut..) this way you could put the usb port pretty much where you wanted to!!

for the nes controller two clock pulses would need to be generated 12nS for the clock and 16mS for the data latch

With dedicated hardware you can interface the LPC port on the motherboard to add a mouse or keyboard or a parallel port, it might be a better choice than USB
Check out the intel LPC specs :

i already have it figured out this would be a very easy mod the dircuit need is identical to the one here http://www.allaboutcircuits.com/vol_4/chpt_12/4.html at the bottom of the page if you read it even accounts for more then 8 bits i.e., the snes controller. with the use of the chip discribed and two 555 timers you could easly interface an nes or snes controller. the first 555 would need to be in an astable state with r1=100kohm r2=750kohm c1 =15nf which would produce a clock of 60hz with a duty cycle of 53.13. the second clock would need to be triggered byt the first in a monostable state with r1= 5.6kohm and c1=1uf which would produce a pulse period of 6.16 . If you do a little research one would fine that this is near identical to what the nes would produce please see http://www.doctronics.co.uk/555.htm. so in theory one could build a serial nes to parallel converter with a few resistors 2 caps 2555s and one 8 bit register
