Just got a softmod XBOX off craiglist. It has UnleashX as the default dashboard. I want to turn the xbox into a media player.
So I installed XBMC as app, uploaded some movies, everything was working well except that I need a bigger hard drive..I read some tutorial here aht it seems to be fairly easy to do that. I got one question though, can I use an old HD that used to be on my computer, or I need to get a brand new one?
Thanks!

With softmodding you NEED to have a drive that locks. Luckily I had an old IDE hard drive that had a locking function. For a full list of drive models check here

I guess that means I can use an old HD from my PC as long as it is lockable?

Yes, as long as its lockable and an IDE HDD it should work just fine. _________________

All right,, just got a brand new 500 GB Western Digital hard drive. Model number WD5000JBRTL, I probably have turned it into a 500 GB paper weight...Help plz!!
The XBOX is V 1.6, and the instruction I used can be found at http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-185.html
It used XBOXHDM v 1.9 to build the new drive, I followed the instruction and everything went smoothly, at the end HD was locked, I got the HDD key and password and everything. However, when I connected the new HD into XBOX and turn it on, it boot into the MS Dashboard instead of the UnleashX dashboard. I put back the original HD and it went staight into UnleashX without any problem.
I then connected the new HD back to PC, and tried to unlock it or re-build dit again. Even though I could see the HD was connected in Bio, the XBOXHD tool would complaint no drive found in the primary master when I tried to run unlockhd -a, the XBROWSER also complaint about the same thing. It looked like XBOXHDM couldn't recognize the hard drive any more.
Is there any way to fix? Much appreciated!!

Softmodding an xbox is ridiculously easy. With the right stuff it takes like 10 minutes or less. _________________
