Brand spanking newbie here...I've been doing a lot of reading but am a little confused. I've got a virgin original Xbox that I want to put a new 60GB drive into, softmod it, and load up emulators, XBMC, et cetera.
I'd been looking at tutorials to find the best way of accomplishing the task, and finally found a thread that recommended AIDeluxe. I downloaded it, and started reading the manual. This is where I got confused. In the manual under the tutorial "Hard drive upgrades using a PC," it says to use XboxHDM (which I don't believe is part of the package).
Am I confused about AIDeluxe being the only thing I need to setup a new hard drive for softmodding my Xbox...?

Yes. You must softmod you xbox. Because you are not just softmodding your HD.
Before you begin. I suggest you review the different types of compatible HDDs for the XBOX.
Heres a chrart with XBOX users in the past that have posted their HDD specifications. HDD Brand, Model, Size, RPM, Buffer, User's Xbox Version and Dashboard, and if the HDD can lock, which is very important.
Thanks for the info. Crap. I was hoping to keep the original drive as-is. And, I'll have to figure out a way to get a hack onto a mem card. By the way, I have no plans on using XBox Live, so if I rent a Live game and put it into the box (per the tutorial), will it expect me to have an account/login before I can get the dash updated...?

Thanks for the link. It looks as though my drive of choice (Quantum 60GB) is supported. That's good news, at least...

I've made my own AR USB device using the provided instructions. Now, one more question and I think I'll be ready for this.
How would I update the dash using the newest dash on the AID disk before I install the softmod as instructed...?

THanks for all your help so far. You've been very kind to a newbie!
I've gotten the dash updated to the latest version. Then I downloaded SID 5 and put that plus the included 007 gamesave on the AR USB I made and copied them to the Xbox. I followed the instructions I found to load the gamesave, which gave me a new menu.
This is where I got lost, as the procedures from here didn't match the instructions I'd been using. The first option was 'First Backup EEPROM,' which I did. The next was a C backup (I believe), and I did that. There were some other menu choices that included a softmod install which I did, then the box wanted to reboot and I allowed it to. I then hooked the Xbox to my network connected via FTP, and copied the cdrive and eeprom directories from E: to my PC and burned them off to a blank CD.
Now I get a "Microsoft EvolutionX" themed dash when I boot with the power button. Booting with the CD drive button gets me a completely different looking menu with options like 'Uninstall softmod.' So, it looks like I installed a softmod, but I never got choices for dual-boot setup, et cetera. Have I done something wrong...?

I should have added that I never saw the SID setup screen during the install as shown in the SID instructions. I believe that's what's causing my confusion.

Sounds like you did a duel boot install but you put the eject dash as sid which is fine really, if you want to try again you can pop in AID and use it to restore the xbox to stock but it will work fine as is.

Many thanks for the help and suggestions. My v1.2 Xbox now has a 100GB drive in it and is softmodded with an XBMC dash. W00t!
