An xbox me and my bro bought in 2003 has been sitting in the closet for 3 years because it won't read discs very well. For christmas, I thought I'd fix it and softmod it and give it to my bro. But I softmodded it first, and this might be where I went wrong. Then I replaced the thompson dvd drive with a used philips dvd drive I got off ebay.
it worked well for 3 days. Then it too started having trouble reading discs. It made a noise like the lens was running into the disc. I took the dvd drive top off so i could see inside, and then I put a clear disc in (like the ones that come on top of cd spindles). Sure enough, the lens ran into it.
and then to make matters worse, eventually the xbox started freezing at the xbox microsoft logo (and with no error code). I didn't want to try to fix it. So I figured the xbox was toast (had it since 2003) and I ordered a used one off ebay with a broken dvd drive. The new xbox came, and I put the philips dvd drive in there. It worked fine for 2 days, and now it's having problems reading discs and making weird sounds like the lens is running into the disc. I got splinter cell to read finally and then softmodded it. Now maybe this has fixed my problem but we shall see... Feel free to shed any light.
