Hi...I am completely new to all this xbox mooding. I have a Crystal Clear Special Edition Xbox version 1.6 (I think) sitting on my desk going to waste. So I thought I would Mod it. I mainly want to use it for Emulators, Storing Videos Clips like Youtube and Media, Cds ect and and as a back storage device. Not that interested in Xbox games anymore other than what I already own.

I don't really have the time to Stuff around too much with modding and I am probably going to stuff up the softmod unless there is an Idiots proof way of doing the softmod lol ?

I was thinking getting a modder in my local area to mod my xbox. He can do it for $254 aussie dollars with a 500gb harddrive and Duo X2 chip. He also offers a HD Mod....."With the High Definition mod, your Xbox will support HDTV modes: 480p (720x480), 720p (1280x720) and even 1080i(1920x1280)!
Your games will be crystal clear, and your dvd's have never looked this good." Do I need this Mod. I don't have a HD Tv yet but plan to buy one next year.

If I am game to try the softmod option....How hard will it be considering I have probably a Xbox version 1.6 or 1.6b? I already own the Action replay Max 8mb memory card. All I then have to do is get the Mechassult Game ($17.95 at local Eb Store)...Screww drivers (where do I get them from?) to open my xbox and a compatible 500gb Harddrive?

If I do manage to screwup the Sofmod Install is there a way to fix it or do I lose my xbox completely?

Also Can I play Visual Pinball and Future Pinball Emus on the Modded Xbox? (I play these the most).

I am also interested in Linux for xbox in the future? Besides emails and web surfing is there anything else you can run on xbox linux?

Hope you guys don't mind all the Questions? Will probably have more questions later Rolling Eyes

Cheers

Uly

Here is ware you can get the softmod save files and such: http://www.aidtracker.com/ you will need a bitclient to get SID.

This is a guide on softmoding: http://www.360-hq.com/modules.php?name=Profile&op=myblog_view&blog_id=249&id=90842

If you get that far and FTP your xbox to copy the eeprom to your PC then even if you screw up the xbox it will be fixable.

With the softmod and XBMC dash you will be able to use 1080i settings with the HD cables for xbox and i am unsure about the pinball games since i have never heard of them.

You can run Linux for the things you listed but the PC is still best suited for that job, hope that helps and enjoy the site. Very Happy

Good luck finding some one that will do it at cost man, that price is about what i got for them, i still do softmods for 150 with XBMC dash and a copy of AID nothing more.

If they feel its a rip off i tell them to get it some ware else.

No one has ever said no to the price. Wink

Ok Got Mechassult, now for more questions....

- These are the only ide Hd I can find at my online shop
*Western Digital Caviar 500G 7200rpm HDD(16Mb Cache) WD5000AAKB
* 500GB Seagate 7200rpm 16M Cache IDE HDD Model No ST3500641A
Are they compatable for the modded xbox?

- The Youtube Tutorial was great is there also a written Tutorial to go with that...or something similar?

- Which programs on the Aid site do I need? Aid v4.40 or Sid 5.01. Which is the easiest to use?

- In your tutorial you backup the eeprom and continue to install...should I back up my eeprom to my pc at that stage or should I continue and do it after the install? If I should do it after backing up the eeprom how do I back it up to my pc at that stage?

- So once I have soiftmodded my xbox and everting is working I will have to then install the new 500gb harddrive and then do the softmod process again for the new harddrive? Are there any tutorials for that?

Ok Thanks for the help so far Very Happy

Uly

Both of those HDD's should work.

SID 5.0 comes with a manual.

You should get both SID and AID. SID is what you use to install the softmod. AID you will use afterwards to add different dashboards and apps.

When you upgrade your HDD with chimp you won't have to reinstall the softmod. I'm fairly sure that XboxHDM will also copy the files over directly so you won't have to reinstall.

Lastly, you should ftp the eeprom to your pc after your done with the softmod. Do it right after you complete the softmod and you should be just fine.

Well I'm still undecided whether I should Do the soft mod or just shell out the cash for The modder to modchip my xbox???

I have had alook thru the sid 5.0 manual. The actual softmod looks easy enuff to do. I'm fairly confident I can do that. But the Ugrading of the Harddrive is scaring the hell out of me lol Not to mention finding a ide harddrive at a reasonable price. Im looking at doing the "Hard Drive Upgrade using a PC" method in the sid v5 manual. Will that work on an Xbox 1.6?

I found a 40gb seagate ide harddrive in an old pc of mine. I was thinking I might try the upgrade on that before spending $125 or more for a new 500Gb harddrive.

If I do use the 40gb hdd...I would use it just for emulation. How many emulators and roms would I fit on it? On my pc I have about 10 emulators with nearly complete sets of roms. I wanted to get some more emulators aswell. Do you think I could fit them all on a 40gb harddrive?

And also will I ever use up a 500Gb hdd? I mainly want it for emulators and Video clips...Ie Youtube stuff, Movies from my camera, Still pics from my Camera and to backup some of my Music cds? Maybe I could go for a lower Gb Hdd in the future??

Also future plans might be to put my Modded xbox into a Arcade cabinet?

Anyway I have spent a week reading everything in xbox hq forums and on the net and I still can't make up my mind what to do lol Rolling Eyes

Cheers
