Hey all, I am installing the huge crystalfontz LCD on the SmartXX chip. I have a question and hopefully someone will know the answer. The pin out on the LCD has 16 pins and I have the wires all soldered to it and ready to go. However, the SmartXX chip only has 12 pins being used. So, LCD pins 7, 8, 9, and 10 which connect to DB1, DB2, DB3, and DB4 are vacant. I don't know what DB1 through DB4 is and no tutorial I found shows.
Any takers??

Yeah, this one is a beat. He bought the real huge one with the large PCB attached to the back and it doesn't fit in the front of the xbox unless you move the controller ports which I have not time or desire to do. I thought about a top mount that flips up, but truly dont' have the time to hash that out either. The customer is very understandable as he has seen the difference in sizes and just wants me to make the connections and he is possibly going to make a freestanding casing for the LCD. The problem is the four wires. I cannot find anything that shows where these four wires go from the pins on the LCD.
So far, all my posts have fallen upon deaf ears. Hopefully, someone will get to me soon. I would like to ship thsi xbox back to him tomorrow.
Catch you later bud!

Well, I got the LCD working but no backlighting.
I heard mention that some LCD's require an added a 5v supply through the chip for the LCD?, some need this to power the LCD.
No tutorials for this unit mention this, but I am not clear on what or how that is done.
Does this mean I have to connect something to the chip, or something from the chip to the LCD?
The wiring diagram states that the number 3 pin on the SmartXX is the VCC 5v connection, and that gets connected to the number 2 pin on the LCD. I have text on the LCD, with no backlighting and I have adjusted the backlighting settings in the LCD configuration on the SmartXX OS Menu/Configurtion section.
Has anyone ever added a 5v connection to a SmartXX chip? _________________ Good Deals: Death@Hand, funkydopenloven, StaticMind, Slamscaper, PorscheXboxter

Realmccloy,
Not sure if you have seen this(I am almost sure you have) but look at this link http://support.bmmods.com/tutorials/smartXXwithLCD.pdf and on page 2 it looks like those pins may not be used. Let me know if that helps.. if not I will look at one of my oither led books when I get home. _________________ GTGene

Yeah, I am way past that issue and was onto another...lol.
The BMmods tut doesn't help much because this one is wired differently. The only problem I have now is no backlighting. As you can read in my last post, that is the only info that I have come up with.
Besides connecting your LCD pinouts to your chip, did you have to draw any extra power from anywhere?
I am thinking he has a bum LCD. It was working all the time, but I had to adjust the pot so I could see the text. It was the backlighting not working that made me think the LCD was dead. I even tried adjusting the backlighting in the SmartXX chip options and no go.

Realmccloy,
Yup.. sounds exactly like the lcd problem I had in my Ham Radio...Talk about a pain in the booty to replace 10 times harder than the first one I tried to mod my XBox with.. Nothing like over cooking an lcd which I understand is easy to do on an XBox. I was unlucky as I waited past the waranty limit and ate that chip... So I cheated this time, I installed the new xLCD from teamx. I connects right to my X3 chip and is powered by it.
Good luck in finding what those do.. but everything I have read says they are not connected to the chip at all... so I would probably guess there is a problem with the lcd. _________________ GTGene

Yeah, I have already confirmed those pins are just left alone. So I didnt connect them to anything.
However, I never could get any backlight on this LCD whatsoever. I'm leaning toward bum LCD for sure. He is using it and going to get a replacement one and then just swap out.
