Ok,

Ive soft modded my Xbox and I'm extremely happy with it. Now I want to make sure it runs cooler and I don't burn out what I know is going to get hours of abuse when I let my 3year old see some of the shows I ripped and put on it for his enjoyment.

- I've seen a few methods of how to install a 80mm fan. Notching the fan or trays
- I've heard remove the RF sheild. Completely meaning the top and the sides?
- Notch out the tin around the fan because it blocks air flow
- Ive seen others install fans on the top of their case where the Jewel used to live. Do they remove the trays or just cut a hole straight down towards the mother board.

Am I missing any other options?
- What about cooling the Hard Drive?
- What about cooling the DVD Drive?

I only ask about the two drives because in every PC case I've ever been in the hard drive and dvd drive are more or less mounted in some form to the case and air can flow around or near it. In the Xbox they are at the very top and there is no air flow. Mabye drill holes on the bottom of the Hard drive tray so there can be some kind of heat transference?

I know Im very new to all of this and maybe Im just over thinking things simply because its a new Hobby and I want to tinker with things just to tinker. Very Happy

Hmm, all I know is my PC case has never been quiter or cooler since I installed a power supply with a 120mm fan. Muhahahahahaha

I just pull the RF out, all the tin in there.

Un-mount the Mobo and just give the tin a good tug.

The 80mm notch out fan is good but cooling the HDD and DVD is a bit of over kill.

The xbox is tough as nails so not much is needed to keep it running.

Here you can see that i pulled all the RF shild (or tin) out and that the side fans are just mounted to the vinted sides.
i left the stock fan as is.

I only questioned the Hard drive and Cdrom because there isn't any air flow movement up there at all. Then again putting holes in the tray would allow heat to rise and maybe bake the drives. Oh well hahaha I worry about that one another time.

I think I'll start with removing all the tin. I wonder if it raises the level of noise. I know with the case cover off it was really noisy when I was hammering the hard drive and running the DVD drive.

I don't think mine got any louder from the lack of tin but you don't want to do this if you use an antenna on the TV since it screws with the signal.

I got cable so i see no interference.

I do have a wireless connection behind it and my DVR uses a antenna to talk to its remote.

I use the dish for TV
