Ok here's my question I've had this 500gb hdd sitting around for about a month and a half that i bought to put in my xbox, but will i be able to install it with a softmodded 1.6 xbox using HDM since i can't use chimp?

Yes but make sure you got your eeprom back up and you will need to use xboxpartitioner to format and re set up the drive with 32KB clusters to stop it from corrupting.
