I'm very new to this whole scene but eager to learn. I was given an xbox system the other day and would like to mod it and install a 120 or 160gig hd. I'm looking for a walk through of modifying a stock xbox and installing a larger drive a step by step if you will. I have read some of the articles here but don't want to do things out of order. Thanks for any help you can give.

Hello bandt and welcome to the XBOX-HQ, we hope you enjoy this and all the other HQ sites we have to offer.
To get you going you will need a bit client to download SID5 and AID 4.20 from here: http://www.aidtracker.com/
So if you find the HDD you have will work then we can move on to installing it and we have 2 ways to do it, one way i like is with CHIMP and it is done like this: http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-260.html but if your xbox is a 1.6 you will need to use telnet and the chimp guide has a link to how to do that at the bottem of it.
MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP YOUR EEPROM!! (tis very important wes forgot that )

Yep, the first part of any mod, should always, always be to backup. As a general rule, we say to backup your C and E drives, and your eeprom as Unreal said.
Trust me, so many people make it hard work for themselves when they don't lol
ok..........thanks everyone. Looking forward to getting started.

I just checked the system settings on my xbox and the ms dash version says d-1.00.4920.01 , In the softmod tutorial it says that it must be d-1.00.5960.01 to work properly. Does this mean I must use a different type of mod?

Easy fix guy, since you haven't modded it yet you can just pop in any game that supports xboxlive and go though the steps like your going to play on line, doing this will update your dash to the right Ver. for you.

Failing that, is there a web site that I could download this video from? Thanks

Try clearing your temps and cookies then check the plug-in settings.
If you have a slow connection it might take a few to load.
