HDM should work as long as the hdd is good and the ide is set with the HDD at the end and the disk drive in the middle of the cable and your PC bios is set to boot from C.
Are you sure the HDD works and or is blank, if so you could try to chimp it.
You are either over looking something or the HDD is bad or non compatible.

the hd is a 40gig Maxtor that i formatted to its original state. I also tried to use the regular xbox hd that was formatted and i get an error msg 6 which i guess means that the hd is locked.

yes i have the eeprom saved but i tried to use the hdm and put the option to recover the password through eeprom but i press the -a i believe and nothing happens...how do i set my computer bios to read the hd? i think that might be the problem why its not reading the hd and giving that msg.

Getting to the PC bios is diffrent for some PC's but i think on most you reboot and in the corner it will say to hold F8 or something to bring it up, then just check to make sure its set to boot from disk drive and that its showing the disk drive as auto detect and HDD as auto detect.

the way the my pc is setup is that im unplugging my cd drive and putting the hd to boot from its since my pc hd is only sata compatable. so i unplugged the cd drive and put the hdm cd in th dvd drive and i push the f12 key and i put to boot from cd drive and thats when the hdm program comes up but it gives that error msg that i posted in the beggining.
p.s if this helps the cd driver is the 2nd one from the top of my computer, the 1st one is the dvd drive. i tried to run the cd from the cd drive to put the hd on the dvd slot but it wouldnt read the cd, so i can only boot the cd from my dvd drive.

If you have Put your cd/dvd drive in primary slave and xbox hard drive in primary master then set the PC bios to boot from disk it should read the dvd drive and see the hdd.

i did that, i witched the wires around and it worked fine when it come time to unlock my hd. but when i put in my other maxtor the option to boot from cd doesnt appear. I unplugged the hd to make sure it wasnt the comp and it worked fine. So i think the HD is affecting it somehow so i wanna reformat the HD all over again and make sure i do it right. Any ideas how?

OK i used the hdm to unclock the retail hd and i put the hd on my Chipped box and ran aid and it worked so i ftp'd the eeprom from the hd and the contents from C and E and it seems to work on my chipped box but when i try and put it on my softmodded box i either get an error msg 5 which i guess its to lock the hd than i lock it and i get an error 5..i dont get it, i put all the old contents from the hd before it was formatted but im still getting an error msg.

Put the HDD in the chip box and use config magic to lock the HDD using the stock xbox eeprom.
