Hi all
I have a working xbox which I had bought to sell on, but never got round to doing so, so have decied to mod it! Instead
I started looking at peoples slim boxes which look pretty cool so thought id give it a try. My plan is to see how cheap I can make this mod. The xbox cost me £5 (bargain!) and I have a 60gb hdd which I rescued from a computer that was left for scrap, so it was free.
So far I have made the case about 2.5cm slimmer. Which is enough room for the original psu and motherboard with heat sinks. Also I have solderd the motherboard ready to TOSP flash it with a bios that will not look for the dvd drive (will flash it as soon as I find my copy of 007 mech assult!)
Now the problem…
The big fan at the back of the xbox is way to big to fit anymore so I need to put in a smaller fan. I have two 5cm by 5cm fans which again were rescued from computers that were left for scrap which would fit great in there. But both will not fit in together.
My question is would one of these fans, placed where the origonal big fan was placed, keep the xbox cool enough?
Technical stuff if it helps is as follows…
Xbox is version 1.2 / 1.3
One of the 5cm fans (the one with 2 wires) reads DC 12V 0.06A
The other (the one with 3 wires) reads DC 12V 0.16A
Any help would be great, thanks

First off and foremost I saw your pic of the xbox you were modding on your other post and man you have a natural gift to make the xbox look so sweet. I mean it! Also that metal grill that the fan sits next too has the worst design flaw. It actually impedes air from getting out so get some tin snips and cut it out and that will increase your air flow big time. About the smaller fans I am going to go with a no that is not enough to cool your xbox. Xbox's by nature are hot running beasts and if you play a game for any length of time that little fan won't keep up with the proper exhausting of hotness. Actually to tell you the truth the original stock fan didn't do the best job of exhausting the hotness. Anyhow yeah I would say using that fan is probably a bad idea as you will probably overheat your xbox. That is just my opinion though. Hope this helps and once again you really have a gift at cosmetic modding bro. Keep up the good work! _________________

Is there a tutorial for slimming down the xbox. did you remove the dvd completely. I don't really need them anyway after modding them I can FTP anything that I need to the box. I would like more info. it sure looks cool!
does it have to be flashed to not look for the dvd? or is there another option.like a wiring config that would make it think it had a dvd? thanks for any help. Btw xbox fans are 12.v but are reduced down to about 6.5 to 7v due to noise issues. if you take the black wire from the fan plug and ground it to the case it will receive the full twelve volts and cool more efficiently and the fan noise I don't notice that much of a difference. there is a grounding screw base that is just to the left of the fan plug about and inch and a half that I used and I also replaced the thermal paste under the chip heatsinks with a higher quality paste. then placed an additional Heat sink on the MCPX chip. I have an xbox that had Heat issues but not anymore. Please send some info on case slimming Thanks

Yeah man most folks flash the TSOP with a bios that wont look for the DVD but if you do it to a soft mod you can gut the DVD drive and leave it hooked up to just the DVD drive board.

Thanks rebelcharm, I will remove all of the metal shielding from infront of the vent.
Since I have two fans what if I was to have one fan at the back and one where the jewl is (so hot air blew out the top of the xbox aswell as the back)? The jewl is pretty much above the heat sinks and have checked and there would be enough room for a fan there (just lol).
Captainhighjack once the box is finished I plan to put up kind of a step by step. Have been taking lots of pics along the way so far.
Another question I have, if I use the two 5cm fans wear can I power them from? One fan reads DC 12V 0.06A, the other reads DC 12V 0.16A. Could I use the 12V that is supplied to the HDD to power them both?

I don't see a problem running the fans power that way if you can run two Hard drives with a power splitter you should be able to run one HD and two fans. there is a yellow that goes to the mobo. and a yellow that goes to the HD but both come from the same place on the power supply and are twelve volt.

I have four or five xbox dvd drives that need Lasers, I would not have to gut a good one, and just quickly looking, it looks like the Samsung has the smallest DVD board. I assume that you would Insulate it real good? and hookup both the ribbon cable and the yellow wire bundle and keep it out of the way? you would not want to let it lay on the motherboard would you.

Thanks, I have the back fan set up and will be fitting the top fan soon.
Today I found my copy of 007 mech assult (at last!) so was able to TOSP flash it with a different bios. I followed this tutorial exactly…
All worked well, I installed the X-ecuter 4981.06_256k bios and used slayers auto installer to set up everything (dashboard, hdd, etc). But I have one problem…
When i remove the DVD drive and switch the xbox on the start up animation jumps and skips, and the eject light constantly flashes. The xbox works fine otherwise and if i reconnect the DVD drive it works perfectly. I did not modify the bios in anyway so I am unsure what is wrong? is the bios looking for the DVD drive?

Wink[/quote] this is what wes213 wrote.Yeah man most folks flash the TSOP with a bios that wont look for the DVD but if you do it to a soft mod you can gut the DVD drive and leave it hooked up to just the DVD drive board. [ what I plan to do is use the circuit board out of an old xbox dvd player and maybe tape it to the HD. so when it looks for the dvd drive it will find one.

anyone figured out whats wrong with my box yet?
just a thought, the new harddrive is set to slave (16 head) but there are a bunch of other ways the jumpers can be set (15 head, 32mb buffer etc.) is it on the right setting?
thanks

In this photo you can see the fan its not been cut or anthing like all other people do and it fits into the stock clips.
2nd slim I did
3rd slim i did.

Have a look here at my old post on slim its a 60x60x25mm fan only mod that was do to get it to fit and hold was glue a little platic strip on both sides of the fan for it to clip into the stock fan clips.
