Post subject: RAM and IDE Upgrade ??

I've been doing some research on the 128mb ram upgrade and IDE cables just to see what most people had to say about them. I'm getting the hint that the ram upgrade doesn't really help any emus except for MAME, running linux, and XBMC. I only want this upgarde to improve my N64 Roms. I saw a guy on youtube playing Mario 64 without a single catch or glitch on his XBOX 1. It played very smoothly, unlike mine, that pauses and skips horribly. I want to make mine that smooth.

So I looked up some more IDE cables and came across this http://www.directron.com/ata100cable.html for very cheap and decided to spread the news. It's no 166, but it's cheap and shipping is free.

So in conclusion, I've asked before if the ram upgrade was a valuable upgrade and not many responded, but the ones who did said no. Now my question is, how many think it is really worth it to buy an ATA166 cable? I don't want to caugh up $20 for one, but if it will help performance of the N64 emu, then it will be worth it for me. Tax check coming and I have a few dollars to help the HQ and my XBOX.

If anyone has found the ATA 166 for less than $20 shipped, please let me know. I'm doing some serious googling and phone booking.

Correct me if I am wrong but I was pretty sure that that cable just really improves your disc read time and not so much emulated material.

Well, you might know more than me about the situation. I do recall though, Wes and someone else telling me that the 166 cable might help. Not only speed up the loading, but could possibly reduce glitching and pausing, due to the loading speed increase.

It makes sense if you think about it. Faster load speed would mean the emu could read the info faster right? I'm looking for anything that would help other than the four chip, 128mb RAM upgrade. I'm taking any suggestions. As I said, I have seen other XBOXs run the N64 perfectly without the RAM upgrade. Mine however, does not run them smoothly.

honestly i havent seen a difference in the ide upgrade...

Also go to junk computer stores or dig through spare pc parts to find your ide cable...you don't always have to goto the store to find spare parts...

When I clean peoples PC's out I excahnge ribbons if i see one. or Y splitters if they don't need it and have extra power plugs..Of course I don't charge people either, so in part i guess i pay myself...

128 mb of ram will make your emulators faster, and the cpu upgrade would allow you to play ps2 games on your xbox (really laggy though). I'm pretty sure there is special n64 emulators that are build to run off all 128 mb of run, or maybe the normal n64 emulators will use them all.

I say if you have the extra money laying around and you want a faster xbox, go for the ram. If you dont have the money and dont really want to run linux or windows on your xbox (or care about the emulators) then dont get it.

I read a tutorial once that showed you how to upgrade your processer to a 1.3 ghz one. At the bottom it says you can now run a ps2 emulator on your xbox. I've never seen one myself, but i guess it may be out there.

Ok guys, back to the issue at hand. I don't really have the extra money for chips. Maybe when taxes come back. I forgot how much they are anyway. I got a link around here somewhere. I also, don't think I have the soldering skill to solder all those fine points. I'm sure I could do it, but I'm kind of looking for a shortcut. If anyone comes up with a solution I would be more than happy to hear it. No idea is a dumb idea in my opinion. At least you were thinking. Razz

Wow that guy sounded like he was recording that video in a echo chamber and he should probably have a few drinks before handling that solder gun. His hands looked pretty shaky. If that is the easy way to do it I think I will pass. Confused
