Helloooo everyone,
I've got 3 Xboxes here that have a Samsung-Toshiba SDG-605 dvd-drive,
and they all have the same prob (one more than the other):
eject responds, but the dvd-tray does not move... (but you can hear the mechanism try),
I've read somebody writing that the magnetism of top lid is too strong, so tray can't get away, but it also happens when tray is out!? so when it's not in than it shouldn't be affected by magnetism?! right?
somebody also said it's fixed when you take of the top lid...
haven't opened it up, but it doesn't seem to be a physical problem between the Xbox case and the dvd-drive...
anyone a fix for this (will take it apart, but other people seemed to have tried that before, with no luck in fixing it, but hey, I'm not other people, lol ),
and don't tell me push in and down or something like that, I mean a real fix, no trick to help it physically out
and for all the Samsung drive lovers,
not all of them are good, not the newer ones:
SDG-605F
firmware: x240
(says on lid: Rev.03) v1.6 Xbox
I have a fourth one & this is the loved one (which reads everything, so also CDR, and the dvd-tray doesn't get stuck):
SDG-605B
firmware: x010
in a v1.4 Xbox from end 2003,
do they have identical hardwarel? if so one could just flash them with the older firmware? but probably not, cause of that F and B modelname difference... but only got one of those 3 open, so can't tell right now...
same size, both 128kb,
now the only question would be if the hardware is the same...
gonna google first some more, if not found, I'll open up both drives...
woops, read some more of that link:

Samsung Drives
Samsung drives have been known as the best drives on the market today, however, Microsoft has been shipping a new Revision F drive that is not as good at reading media, and can not read ANY CDR media without a firmware hack and a new laser. These drives are one of the best and most expensive of their class. They read almost anything, however old drives (Rev. B) cannot read DVD+R unless it is bitset to DVD-ROM. These drives are compatible in all XBoxes to date. Samsungs have a speed of about 4x.
other laser too... too bad...

Ok i know this wont fix all of your probs but if it helps some of you thats a start.
Check the links i put up and let me know if this helps any of you.
that last link did it wes, I think it's fixed (time will tell)!
thanks for looking that up, cause I searched the forum first too,
did not find that thread... maybe I configured search not very efficiently,
so thanks for your great bloodhound instincts in finding threads & links !!!
That happens on my philips drive sometimes. I just smack the top of the xbox where the drive is and it opens.
nahh, that doesn't work too well with Samsung drive,
with mine it was better to just press repeatedly two/few times eject button,
then it would open when it was first stuck,
and I'm getting a serious Xbox collection here, and not the time to prep them so I can sell 'em, guess I love 'em too much to sell, lol
and if you wanna sell it, it sure don't sound good in the description: smack/tap/hit the Xbox till it opens , that'll bring the value wayyy down
so I'm pretty glad it's fixed (now just hope that tape never comes loose )
Regards!

I think I have the worst luck in the world. I tried these things and nothing worked. Drive works fine with the cover off. Never catches anything. Put the top back on and it doesn't even budge. I have a layer of electrical tape and a layer of masking tape over that. What is the deal? _________________

lol , yeah, lets leave that to the dumb mobsters ,
I don't tap Xbox, I only tap ass
@ Dkoots
if you take off the top cover and lie it flat on your desk, is it perfectly horizontal flat? could be that yours is closer to the laser which makes still too strong magnetism...
but you can always hear it try right (cause you say "don't even budge")?
maybe with yours the mechanical mechanism (motors etc.) have worn out?!

Thanks for the feedback. After tampering with it for 45 mins or so, I said screw it and put tape on the actual plastic center piece. I punched wholes in three pieces of electrical tape about 3/4 inch long and placed them on the center peice so that the little disc nob still touches the disc. It works fine now. The tape all over the case didn't help. I had to put it on the source of the problem.
I should have taken pictures, but I put it back together already and the screws are so hard to get in and out. It doesn't have torque screws, it has wrench screws. The drive opens every time now. _________________
