A lot of the old Fuji drives used to have a rubber protector on them, much like the way you describe, perhaps it was that. Used to get them a lot on the 10Gb versions.
As for the rest, what version Xbox does your mate have?

It say 1.0 if solder is filled in the LPC holes. My 1.0 xbox came with a rubber skin around it, and the drive was a western digital. _________________

So I think basically what we're all trying to say is that there isn't anything wrong with the box. We've all seen fans and rubber-wrapped drives in Xbox's before so I think we're all ok.
Like the guys said, its proably a 1.0 box, before they removed the fan and as for the drive, well, you've got a free piece of rubber!

I need to change that and i need to get that 1.1 back to him and out of my head.

I believe it's for protection, supposed to act as a bit of an insolation for impact as I recall. It was the most pointless thing in the world!

lol, why would you want a hard drive to hold the heat in!? I don't think it was meant as protection when it was inside your case, I think it was more for when it was outside.

lol, 8Gb cartridges huh?! Nice man
All you need now is some sort of quick install process, instead of having to take the box apart every time.
