Hey everyone Razz ,

I've just got here a v1.0 black XBox which has never been opened,
the strange thing is, when you put the power cable in, it goes on right away,
when you push eject it powers off (so you have to push in the tray to load a game), and the power button doesn't work most of the time?!

I'm going to open it up, I've got another v1.0 which has a bad Thomson DVD-drive (of which pot tweaking until now only made it worse Rolling Eyes ) and which is still open to compare the wireing...

anyone an electrician here Laughing ?

another question: I was quite interested in this box because I wanted to use a powerplug adapter with RF remote, so you can power on your XBox with remote, but is powering off by unplugging power bad for the hardware?

correct that, the power off button does work to turn it of, but power on only works with the eject button (the only way, cause the power on button does not work to put in on, only works to turn it off), and when you don't turn it off, it keeps powering on when you plug it in,

but since it's very annoying that the eject button turns it off, I guess I'm going to try fixing it.... (otherwise it would have been cool to use it with an RF remote power module... is there a way to modify the XBox internally to do that? (cause I've seen someone just blocking the power on button with gum/glue... don't want that Shocked )

thanks for any info,

take care!

Kind regards

hmmm, trouble trouble,

seemed to go off after a while,

now I can't turn it on, press eject, powers up a sec, then short silent beep I think, and off it goes...

opening it up right now,

(must say, I'm not so much fond of the v1.0 XBox, the fan of the GPU (which is passive in newer XBoxes is pretty loud, think I'm going to put an resistor between it, so it runs slower and silent... cause what's the point on such a fast fan in such a constricted area?!)

will keep you posted,

grtz

double check your wire plugs to your power switch/eject button where they connect to your mobo while you have it open looking for bad traces you could also have a bad mobo

as for your fan if your using xbmc you should be able to control your fan speed

done that,

does XBMC also control the fan of the GPU?
I think it can only control the case-fan?

if I disconnect the dvd-drive, it stays like 10 seconds on before it shuts down,
with the dvd-drive just a sec with that silent beep (which seems to come from the dvd-drive, tested it in other XBox, works fine (though doesn't read CDR & CDRW, another crappy Thomson drive...)),

the owner of that XBox did unplug and plug it in to turn it on and off, don't think that's very healthy for the hardware... my guess is the motherboard is broken,

blowed out the dust, disconnected and reconnected the yellow plug from buttons,

going to check out how to take appart those buttons and maybe try to connect the buttons of working XBox to it (but wires too short, so need to take it apart...)

anyone other idea's ?

thanks!

(going to check out how to take appart those buttons and maybe try to connect the buttons of working XBox to it (but wires too short, so need to take it apart...)

If that dont fix it then i wold start running over the traces.

but...:

running over the traces.

what does that mean, what are traces, you mean the connector plugs to the motherboard?

I'll completely take it apart, mobo out & stuff, but will first google how to get inside power buttons...

thanks again,

will keep you posted!

found out how:
http://www.takeitapart.net/archives/xbox/

switched power buttons with good console & vice versa,
and it's not the cause,

but there's hope: if I keep power button pressed on (nothing happens) and then press eject, tray comes out, press it again, tray goes in (without shutting down, which it does if power button not permanently pressed in), then I release the power button, and now it seems to run stable, has not fallen off yet,

quite bizar, what could cause this?

super news:

I unplugged it, plugged it in, which made it power on automatically,
I press eject, works as it whould, I press power, it powers off,
I press power, and it POWERS ON!

so it worked as it should,

I unplug it again, plug it in, it does not power on automatically!
so now it's completely normal,

so my guess is the problem is at the power plug connection?!
I don't know what fixed it, but sure glad it's working!

just one more question:
is powering off by unplugging bad for the hardware, or is it as good as with button? cause with button it closes tray when open, so I guess it's powered of more smoothly? cause I was going to use a RF remote power plug adapter if it were to automatically go on at plugging it in... (but which it doesn't do anymore)

also, is there a way to control the GPU cooler fan?

cause XBMC fan override does only control case-fan...
and it's very noisy...
or the only way by putting resistor in between?

thanks,

regards

crap: I've put dvd-drive & hdd back in place, tested it again:

put powerplug in, boots automatically,
now I can't turn it off with power off button,
eject doesn't turn it off now, works normally...

former owner described his problems like this...

only when it's off, I mostly can't get it on for more then a sec,
but when I press power on button a lot of times while pressing eject to turn it on (since the power button does not turn it on) it will stay on (though doesnt work all the time),

this box is cursed, lol Twisted Evil

strange strange strange...

will keep messing with it until it's normal,
and if it stays like this it would be the ideal box to use with RF remote powerplug

If the main prob is not being able to turn it off try the shutdown button found on most dashes.

if it worked ok once, I should be able to get it back to that,
so I'll try some things, I think it's probably the powersupply...

weird thing: if I press eject onces, it stays on for a sec,
if I press it twice it stays on and stays on, strange...
I think it's a magic cursed XBox, probably very rare, lol Twisted Evil

nope, haven't, but since I've put the front with buttons on working XBox and that one works with them, that's not the cause,

switched the powersupplies of working XBox, still same symptoms, so it's definedly the mobo... I have it in my hands right now, will try it outside the box, maybe there's somewhere contact with the XBox's case or something,

what are those rubber patches for? to prevent contact with case?
they don't seem to be very descently put?
