I've heard its possible to have all my media on a PC on the network and have the Xbox stream it over the network, thereby eliminating the need for a massive HDD in the xbox.

But i dont really know how to go about it, I have XP, an xbox crystal 1.6 and XBMC. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Sound s like you want to set up your SMB share you can find that info here man.
http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/wiki/index.php?title=Configuring_PC_Shares

Main thing is to set your pc to share the drives you want to use from the xbox and add your pc as a source in XBMC.

Thanks, i just found the xbmc site's wiki on it

i've got another question though, if i no longer have to move the media to the xbox HDD, i dont have to worry about the names being FATX compatible right?

In other words, do the filenames of the files on my shared PC drive have to be fatx compatible for XBMC to read/stream them?

do you know much about NAS drives? they seem to cost ~£30 more than the non-NAS equivalent

Thay allways run a little more i guess its cuz it has the externel case and usb cord.
If you got room in your pc for a second hdd you might want to add it that way, It will transfer to the xbox faster.

yeah it would be a lot simpler if i had a desktop but because i've got the laptop i dont like to tie it down to a desk because of an external drive. Thats why i'm looking at a drive that can work independently Very Happy

You can also get one of those usb drive enclosers for like 10-20 bucks. I kindof want to get one for my laptop since its only got a 160 gb hdd. Im probobly gonna wait on getting one myself since I want to upgrade my RAM to 2 gigs.

I've had enclosures for some years now, since i've been using laptops exclusively for about 6 years. the problem being when you plug anything like that into your laptop you are then tied down to a desk or power outlet and then it just becomes a desktop.

I'm trying to work out what would be the best solution for extra storage without locking my laptop down to an power socket.

I was running a NAS for a bit, but took it back to the store...too slow for my likings. I was running the same as you, laptop only...ended up buying a cheap a$$ second hand PC and chucked a big HD in that, works A1. You don't need anything wicked fast.
