I dont have a desktop pc available to me but i have a laptop and an external 3.5" usb enclosure.

im pretty sure that you can as long as the IDE cable fits the HDD to xbox and the program runs lol

i guess a potential problem would be accidentally selecting my laptop's main drive for format.

but that means xboxhdm would have to include DOS usb drivers to recognise the adapter

You need to connect the IDE cable to a ATA connector inside of the laptop. If you don't have one, then you can't use it.

My laptop has a SATA drive, but opening it up sounds like too much hassle so i'll just have to find a desktop, thanks though

Random, but anyways, desktops are awesome, i dont like laptops. They just don't work for me. When i get older ill just build a little shed thing out in the backyard and put a desktop in it. Then i can be outside using the comp =P
