a bios (e.g. EvoX) lets the xbox run unsigned code. if you get another bios you can install apps, emulators, enev save full games on your hard drive. of course you need a modchip for all this _________________ XBOX

BIOS = Basic Input Output System ,
its a piece of software that directly controls any hardware it was written for ,,
its the first thing that boots after powering up the xbox or the computer ,
oryginal xbox bios was written with a lot of limitations to what the xbox hardware and OS can do ,
hacked bios is just the bios with all the limitations removed ,
it also may contain some extra code to enable some other features
that the oryginal xbox was not intended for .
the bios is stored in a little chip on the xbox motherboard thats known as TSOP ,
Chip is just an extra space for storing the hacked bioses ,
but the Tsop is also flashable with hacked bios in xbox versions 1.0 to 1.5

You can simply look at it as the thing that sets the rules for your xbox, what it's allowed to do, not allowed to do, how fast the fan runs, all kinds of things.
MS Bios that they have in the retail system before you mod it limits you to what you can do. They don't want you saving games to the HD, they don't want you to be able to save or run applications.
That's why you put a hacked bios onto your modchip. It revamps the rules and gives you free reign!
Once you have the bios, there are different ways to flash (instsall) the bios on the modchip. Some mod chips require you flash them with a programmer before you install, other chips flash from a USB cable, and some can flash right from a web browser or a disk that you insert in the game tray (DVD Rom Drive of the Xbox).
Now your next question is probably, what the f*** is a TSOP HA
