Hello everyone, thanks for taking time to read my question. Here's my story:
I've had my xbox ever since it came out and never had any problems with it. Recently I turned it on after a long time of not playing it (a few months), and the infamous red light blinked around the button. My hard drive stated clicking and the Xbox would not load up. In the beggining, it happened about once a week, but the games still worked. The clicking became more and more frequent and now nothing works. You all probably have heard this story a thousand times.
Anyway, I did some searching that confirmed the worst: my xbox died
I read that in order to change HDs, I need a modded xbox, otherwise it will not work.
My question is this: Can I take the hard drive of another xbox and replace it on mine without having to mod? Could this "Hard drive transplant" save my beloved Wheezy?
I am looking for alternatives to save my consule without modding, because I dont want to mod now. What about those motherboard/harddrive kits that they sell on the net? Could that be worth a try?
Thanks for the help!

Your chances are you will probally want to softmod it, if you want to go real cheap, easy, and fast.

ok your gonna have to buy a chip in this case.
Let me break it down for you tho. That hard drive is locked to your motherboard, and without a mod of some sort to lock a new one to it, you will not be able to just put one in. So, you need a mod chip to bypass this. Softmodding is impossible unless your xbox is working fine.

Even if I put in a hard drive from another xbox, I still need a chip?
I ask this because I'm in brazil and I will visit the US for a few days soon. My friend has his old xbox that still works, and he is willing to sell his HD for me. I want just the HD because a whole xbox takes room in my luggage and Custums could charge taxes on the way back.

Could you tell me how I can do that?
Can I do it at my house with or do I have to take it somewhere, like a store where they can do that?
I know nothing about modding, my whole experience with modding has been opening up my xobx and trying to put the HD as a slave on my PC for me to read it, which didnt work.
Also one more question: If I just take the motherboard and the HD from my friends xbox, and replace mine, it should work without modding, right? That means that I will just by using my Xbox´s case and the DVD drive, but the motherboard and HD are from my friends xbox. (again, I am asking about just motherboard and HD due to traveling luggage space. The whole xbox will take too much room and weight).

Yes if you have the MB and hdd that will work.
The mod chips have gotten ez now thare are lots of how tos out thare and you can get the chip with a solderless pinheader, makes it simple but if thats not your style just take the MB and hdd from your pal.
Just dont want to be at the airport when you have to tell them its an xbox and not something els.
