My dad boss at work just got a new quad core so he decided to sell me his old Dual-core about(2yrs) old, for only $300. Heres what it is.

MotherBoard: Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
Proccsors: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core processor 4200+
Video: Dual Nvidia 6600GT series
Wireless G PCI card
Marvell Yukon PCI Ethernet Card
NVIDIA nForce network Controller
Realtek Fast Etherner NIC
Harddrive : 250GB Sata Seagate
Dual Sony burners one is a CD one is a Dual layer DVD
Iomega Zip
Fullsize Antec Tower
500Watt Powersupply

HERE are some of the Problems, Hes got money and likes to play games so he had a computer guy build this for him, When my dad brought it home today the first thing I did was open it and check it out...
Each video card has a stock heatsink and fan, Both fans are fried, they over heated and melted the internal components!! so i have the case open right now with a floor fan as ventilation, ALSO! the fan on the chipset will start moving when you touch it but then get a dry sound and freeze, its Asus that came with the board, he never opened that case, (no knowledge of computers) so how far is it gone, Im monitoring the temp with a program and its good with the floor fan and its going to a guy a know up town to see what he can do, but did the heat greatly take some life away???

if you have melted components on the video cards, the best thing to do would be replace them. Besides, any 7 series nvidea will probably out-preform sli configured 6 series, and would be cheaper, too. 300 dollars is a good deal for the components mentioned, so don't feel bad about having to spring for a new gfx card.

theres nothin really melted on the board, its just that the fans screw into the heat sinks and the fans are what melted... i defiantly want to upgrade, but not til' after i get out of basic then tech school. I was going to build one anyway but couldnt pass up the deal.. im gonna try to contact nividia if my uptown computer guy doesnt call me back, and see if i can just get the fans for cheap..

ill defiantly have money once i get out of tech school, are these still pretty good "Geforce 7800GS" then SLI them together..

You can always purchase new fans for the cards, yup, they are available. Or of course, you can get yourself a water cooling kit and attach the video card blocks to the cards. I'm right in thinking that the 6600GT cards have the power supply for their fans on the card itself, yeah?

theres a spot on the Motherboard right next to each card.. thats what they plug into.. also right next to those theres a molex connecttor from the psu to power up the pci-e's.. i have a bigwater 735, but i would have to buy 3 new water blocks.. one for cpu, and one for each card... i might just replace the fans and then water cool after tech school. i leave in about 15 to 20 days...
