Hi, I'm slickfire, and I also go by The Drizzle, but that is no matter, my friend just gave me an xbox (he had two) and I've been meaning to make a media center out of an old desktop, but I feel I'll have a little more fun with this method. Anyways, what I want to do specifically is do a hard-mod, upgrade the hard drive (hopefully one that I have locks properly) and install XBMC and maybe some emulators down the road.
First things first, I see all these version numbers floating around (1.x) which is nothing like the M$ dashboard version numbers I'm used to, and I just wanted to know where to find my version number.
Second, I have the Phillips optical drive which, from what I read, means I'm not going to be getting much info in through there, so should I look for a chip that's flashable through usb or what?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

i dont know much about hard modding, but yes, i believe that you can find your xbox version by what cd drive you have, try lookin around the site, google search etc...
and softmodding is pretty fun....

a modchip is by the best way to go. either the Xenium Gold or the xecuter X3 are both very good.
you dont verify ur xbox version by the DVD drive brand. (say its been swapped at some point). Rather the video chip brand, memory chip brand and motherboard layout as well as the xbox kernel version (this is the K number in the M$ dash info screen where you see the dash version)
check the version using the following link

Primarily you need to know if it is a v1.0-1.5 or a v1.6. The 1.6 is the only one that has an Xcalibur video chip.

id recommend a duo x2, easy to install/flash sturdy and cheap if you want to go cheap. but yea you can find out which version you xbox is by looking at the dvd tray and the manufacturing date located on one of the bottom stickers. theres a more successful way to do it tho. im not gonna seach google for it right now but you look at your hardware on the motherboard like the video chip and where everything is located also the poser cable that goes from the powerboard to the motherboard if that has 1 or 2 rows if it has 1 then its either a 1.0-1.1 if it has 2 then it is a 1.2-1.6 but if it has the 1 then you pretty much know your version. _________________
