Post subject: Samsung drive tray not opening?

I'm buying heaps of 1.6s all with the same fault and it seems to be a problem for a number of your members. (Drive tray won't open)
Take the cover off and it works - not advisable as the laser can/will blind you!!

I'v tried filing down the disk holder tabs, changing the rubber belt, swapping covers, and checking the white tab & groove placement (as per your tutorial), cleaning and lubing the tray and guides- to no avail.

Can it be the motors are dying? Why does it then work with the cover off? Why is there a clicking sound asif something is getting caught inside?
There are no signs of rubbing inside the cover and nothing protruding but the disc stabilizer hanging from the top cover

I'v tried bending the top covers to the point where the tray opens but the top disc stabilizer then makes a grinding sound as it spins against its housing.

Many people have told me to just leave a disc inside, and this does work - but I fail to see how a few ounces of disc can make such a difference

Any ideas/comments?

My guess, it could be getting hung up on the case itsself, try taking off the dvd tray bezel. Then see if it ejects normally.

Hey this is the fix for that problem. The magnet that holds the disc in place is sticking, to fix remove the glued in metal circle that is above the lock hub . This is a round piece of sheet metal about 1.75 inches and hold the disc hub in place. It is glued in. This will decrease the magnetism enough to allow the tray to open freely. This will create a problem if you turn the xbox upside down while the tray is open. You will then need to open the case and retrieve the hub. I have never tried replacing the megnet with another due to lack of a 2nd mag at the time or repair. You may try this since you have multiple units. I have used this fix many times. A peice of plastic can be hotglued in it's place if need.

I didnt even realize there was a magnet involved. Im going to try one of those "demagnetizers" on it as it seems the problem is the power of the magnet overpowering the motor.

Thanks for the info, Im very grateful as this is on the increase and the Samsungs are favourites down here.

Its and idea, however, replacing the metal with plastic will solve the problem. Do not demag too much. This will make the game not grip enough to spin at full speed.

I tried removing the metal - no luck - it was moulded into the plastic!
I tried removing the magnet, no chance.
I then cut some 10mm round discs out of sticker vinyl and stuck 3 of them over the metal - that was enough to detune the magnet and now it opens 1st time.
Havent tried a demagnetizer yet, guess its just a matter of how long to apply it.
Wont removing the metal defeat the object of having a magnet in the first place? Theres nothing to hold the disc down but the weight of the plastic stabilizer

The metal that needs to be removed is part of the dvd drive metal case. Not the metal in the hub, the metal that keeps it in the drive. Might be under the sticker on the top of the drive. Just the cover peice.

The "plastic stabbilizer" as you call it is the hub, these plastic hubs have metal molded inside for the magnet to hold. The metal you want to remove is part pf the drive casing. The cover plate that holds this hub into the drive, most of the time they are stickered or glued on, can come off.

I don't like the idea of removing the plastic "stabilizer" - I had a disc shatter in my writer the other day and it was a write-off.

The demagnetiser doesn't work - had both pieces on the demag for 24hrs and it still wouldnt open!

My advice is to:
1)Put 2-3 round 10mm stickers over the metal insert. This works every time. I'v done 3 drives this way this week.

2)The other thing I can recommend for those who can't/won't open their boxes is to get hold of one of those clear CD "spacer " discs you get with new CD's and leave that permanently in the drive. At least it wont be trying to read the disc all the time and it keeps the two magnets apart.

I'll be using a combination of these two methods from now on....

Thanks for putting me on the right track & I hope find an even easier way

Still fixing Samsungs by stickering up the magnets and leaving blank disks in the drive - no comebacks yet!

Iv upgraded to a LG GDR 8163B drive ($90.00nz) and worth every cent, has read everything I can throw at it and transfer speeds in dvd2xbox are seldom below 4,5MB/Sec.
Beware - The 8164 works as well but not in MS mode Im told.
As it is a PC IDE drive it requires an adapter to replace your yellow cable.

I have four kids and our xbox would not open for anything. I was so frustrated and the kids were very upset. I searched the web and most of the information was either too technical for me or would cost more than replacing the box altogether. Then I stumbled across your forum here and read about the magnet problem. I decided to test your theories because it would cost nothing and would be worth a try! So last night I cut some of my 4 year old daughters clear plastic stickers into tiny doughnuts and stuck them to the magnet located above the disc tray on the casing. And then I put it all back together (except for one large outercase screw which my one year old has misplaced) and walla!!! You guys are geniuses!!! It works every time! I do not even have to leave a disc in the drive, it is perfect! I am so pleased and grateful! I appreciate your solid info and easy to understand directions! My kids love you!
Thanks again! Very Happy
