i think the key point that many of you are missing is that the drive was bought at outpost.com, owned by Fry's electronics (both right up the street from me) Fry's has a nasty reputation for buying manufacturer seconds that otherwise wouldn't be sold as new products anywhere else. Fry's will also sell open box, surplus, and refurbished products as new items as long as they werent originally sold somewhere else. in my opinion Seagate makes the best drives available right now and their rma process is a dream. currently we have over 300 seagate drives in service where i work and i have only had to exchange 2 of them, prior to their actual death as well so no data was lost. I'm sure the reason that seagate wont replace your drive for 2 weeks and will replace it with a used one is because of a special arrangement with Fry's electronics. had you purchased the same drive elsewhere it would have a slightly different serial number, possibly different model number and a first rate warranty. i suggest that if you are going to purchase a hard drive online that you get it from www.newegg.com. their service is spectacular, they package the crap out of hard drives (so UPS doesn't kill them) and they have no questions asked returns.

Well they told me on the phone and in the terms of contract (reply E-mail with my RMA) that that was there policy plain and simple. As for outpost.com yeah I will never do business with them again

Reviews like that is why I picked a seagate....I just hope that my used drive (replacing my new one) will be as good as other members have stated in this topic

I also use newegg.com for cpu parts. also WD hdd are the only ones i trust i have only had one problem and WD sent me a new drive no charge. also take no offense to this but you bought a 300gig for $80.00 that sounds too cheap to be true. and when it comes to mobos hdd and any other computer parts you get what you pay for their are sites that have good deals dont get me wrong but if you want a desent drive you have to pay for it for exmple 120 gig WD is anyware from $85-$129(depending on were you get it) if i saw one for $45 or even 50 and they said it was new i would stay the hell away from it like it had some sort of STD. but other people might feel differently about it, but thats just my 2 sense worth. like i said i prefere WD. they have good drive and exellent customer service.

Love Seagates, HATE Maxtors.

Bought a 80 gig Maxtor a couple of years ago, and it lasted the whole 3 days before it died on me.

I've been using Seagate as my main HDD supplier for years now (for both PC and Xbox), except for the small exception of my WD 250gb which is my main PC drive.

All computer part manufacturers go thru phases and everyone has made their fair share of junk. seagates used to suck back in the day and now they are awesome, maxtors were crap 98-2000, the WD bb series was a joke ect... the moral of the story is that you shouldnt buy crappy drives from crappy vendors regardless of the brands

Thats what si crazy...how do you really know?? also I hear good things about fry's till you. As for the drives being cheap..it was all sealed up everything so I don't think it was used at all. As for the warr it would be the same even if you paid 180.00 I jsut happened to get a bad drive. WD, I have heard great things about, but to load. Seagate, I heard great things about them, but price and now what I have had happen to me. Maxtor, Great things and yet three members here have trashed them too. So I point in this and also what I learned is go with the best price and warr for the drive. I guess they go bad at anytime no matter who makes them

the thing is about maxtor refurbs is there is a limited warrenty that comes with them, you think there would be a replacement warrenty that comes with them LOL but there isnt, the main thing is it comes down to the vendor and if the decide what warrenty they decide to offer.

I agree about Newegg. What a great company to deal with. I don't buy nearly 10% of what I used to, but they are still a dream to buy from. I just bought a Dolby 5.1 surround sound card for my PC for $7.00. Works like a charm. Anytime I even accidently ordered the wrong product they took care of me expeditiously.
