Hey, guys. I haven't been around in a while, but I've recently decided to get back into modding and have come up with a ridiculously ambitious project for someone of my skill to be attempting.
I'm going to be building a new system designed to be easily transported when I have drill and training with my Guard unit (and also for when we get deployed). I'm going to have a built in 8.5" LCD screen and speakers, but I also want it to have the normal outputs for hooking up to a larger TV/sound system when available.
I have a Magnavox portable DVD player that I just bought and am willing to disassemble for the project (assuming I don't screw it up in the process), but I was wondering what complications I might run into when I go to put it in. It has an AV input, so I figured I can just use the standard cables concealed inside the Xbox case to display, but is there some kind of processor unit in the DVD player that I'll need to port over for it to function?
If anyone has experience with doing something like this, I'd appreciate your guidance.

Welcome back, m8, and thanks for defending our country.
As far as the screen, as long as it supports the a/v input, you should really have no problem just soldering up the wires for the most part. What I'd do as soon as I could is plug in the xbox to the DVD player and see how she runs. If it's good, then go get 'er, everything should still work, even if you remove the screen and hardwire the system. Just remember to keep any graphic boards that might be directly attatched to the screen to enusre full capabilities. _________________ "That which does not kill you, only makes you stronger."
I have a 2 week course coming up on August 3rd, and I sincerely doubt I'll be able to finish or even really get very far on the project by then, so I'm contemplating just waiting til after I get back to rip everything apart again. I'm pretty sure we'll have lots of down-time during this one (it's just a school on how to drive the new Stryker vehicles), so I'm thinking I do want to have the Box along, but I'll just have to deal with having the whole system and hooking it up to the DVD player.
I just got the adapter today to plug the two together, and the display doesn't look bad at all. I was wrong, it's not an LCD screen, it's a TFT (whatever that is), but it's still thin and a nice resolution for the size it is.
I'll keep you guys updated on any progress.

If you feel you want to when you get the project started, start up a new thread under this forum to keep a worklog, upload pics and such to keep us informed. I'd like to see where you're goin with this, m8.
And once again, I salute ya, bro. My brother in law is heading out to Lansing, MI next week to finish up basic, then he's off to Iraq this sept. So I definitely have massive respect for all of you. _________________ "That which does not kill you, only makes you stronger."
Sure, man. I'll take as many pics as I can and try to keep track of all the supplies and tools I use so others can replicate my work if they're so inclined.
And thanks for all the kind words. It's always nice to hear that you're appreciated.
(On a humorous note, a couple months ago I was driving to my armory in uniform and a car pulled out in front of me and damn near clipped my front end. I raised my arms in a 'what the hell' fashion, and the female driver flipped me off. As she hit the brakes hard to slow my vehicular progress, I couldn't help but notice the star-spangled ribbon on the back of her minivan that said "I support our Troops!" Good stuff.)
