The DVD Forum has approved version 1.0 of the specifications for High Definition DVD (HD-DVD) and the mandatory use of three video codecs -- MPEG2, WM9 (VC-9) and MPEG4 AVC(H.264), for HD-DVD Video playback devices. VC-9 is Microsoft's Windows Media Video 9 video codec, which delivers high-definition video with up to six times the resolution of standard DVD-video, at approximately one-third the bit rate of MPEG-2.

In conjuction with the approval of HD-DVD by the DVD Forum, STMicroelectronics and Microsoft Corp. announced that the two companies are working together to develop a series of new integrated circuit components for manufacturers of consumer electronics devices such as set-top boxes, DVD players, digital video recorders (DVRs), Portable Media Centers, home-networking devices and more.

These components will extend the reach of high-quality, secure Windows Media 9 Series content, in both standard and high definition, to a wide range of popular devices. Support of Windows Media 9 Series in products such as these means consumers will be able to easily enjoy the high audio and video quality that Windows Media provides.

The good news is that no matter when the next-generation consoles ship, HD-DVD will be a de-facto standard, ready to power future video game systems' media drives.
