Coin-based Games Help to Teach About Money and Math

You read that right. We are going to understand exactly how you can teach your kids to learn simple math and money management skills using coin-based games. We are first going to understand what coin is and then dive deeper into different ways it can be used to teach simple math.

What is a Coin?

A coin is nothing but a piece of metal that has an official government stamp and which can be used as money. To put it in simple words, a coin is something one needs to buy things from a store. So, a coin is a perfect instrument to help kids learn about money and the math involved in making a purchase.

How is it Used for Teaching Purposes?

As we mentioned above, coins can be used for teaching purposes as well. There are so many ways to use coins which we are going to discuss in this section of the post. Let’s discuss all kinds of fun games we can play with coins to increase our money management and math skills.

  1. Money Toss: This game involves putting coins in a bowl. The coins that fall in goes to the player and the rest go to the next player. At the end of the game, everyone counts their money and the highest one wins.
  1. Dollars and Dice: This game is played using a dice and fake coins that can be numbered. The game is played to collect enough coins to make a dollar. It makes a great counting game for kids.
  1. Money Matching: So, money matching involves taking turns to draw a card out of the deck and create the value on the card using the coins provided. There’s no winner in this game. It can be played just to improve a kids ability to do simple math.
  1. Hide and Seek: You can hide the coins everywhere in your house and make the children find them. The player with the highest totals wins. Then the one who wins can hide the coins in the house.
  1. Shopping Center: You can make the kids try buying different objects in the house after you put a price tag on them. They will have to count their coins and present the exact amount to buy the objects.

How will it be Useful in Future?

Coins are so useful even after they get banned from the government after years of use. One of the best uses of coins is demonstrated by coin collectors who make a huge collection of coins and sell them for thousands or sometimes millions of dollars. There are many coin enthusiasts who are always on the prowl for antique coins in the most pristine conditions. If you have one, you should probably go try to sell them in the future.

Over to You

We hope by now, you know exactly how coins are so useful to teach a thing or two about math and money. There are so many other ways as well to use coins in order to solve the purpose. We’ll cover them probably in our next post. Let us know what you think about the ones we have mentioned in the forums!
