British development group Climax is stealing a march on next-generation console development, announcing this week that work is well underway on a vehicle-based title codenamed Avalon for PS3 and Xbox 2.

The new game is being worked on at the company's Brighton studio, which was responsible for the MotoGP titles, and expands on the studio's vehicle-based game experience by adding land, sea and air vehicles to the mix.

Avalon is based on Climax' internal middleware engine, Blimey 2, which the company recently announced was ready to be implemented on the Xbox 2 (or Xbox Next, or Xenon, or whatever we're calling it this week) and PlayStation 3.

"This is an exciting, bold stride forward for Climax," enthused Tony Beckwith, head of Climax' Brighton studio. "The fact that we're one of the first independent companies to start work on a next generation project reaffirms our commitment to remaining among the development elite."
