A 21-year-old Sheboygan K-mart employee was charged today with stealing more than $7,000 in electronics by packing them in larger boxes that he later purchased, according to a criminal complaint.

Nathaniel A. Gustafson, of 2509 Henry St., faces up to three years in prison if convicted on the count of felony theft.

According to the complaint:

Gustafson was arrested Thursday after admitting to the thefts in an interview with a loss prevention officers at the store, 2633 S. Business Drive.

Gustafson told police he started taking sodas from K-mart in August, and in December moved up to electronics. In his first significant theft, Gustafson took 30 DVDs, two Xbox controllers and ten Value games, concealing them in a Crock-Pot box that he returned and purchased a few days later.

A week later, he took a camcorder, 10 Value games and 10 movies in a toaster oven box, which he similarly purchased a few days later.

Wednesday, he found an old set of keys and used them to take an Xbox 360 hard drive, two Xbox 360 HD DVD players, two PlayStation 3 systems and other items from a locked video game case. He concealed them in boxes for a microwave and toaster oven box, but set off alarms as he was leaving the store with the toaster oven box.

The items totaled $7,218.
