Microsoft's denial failed to silence the rumor that Bungie Studios is going independent.

According to Game Informer, yet another source "close to Bungie" made a statement about the separation. Aside from stating the same reason we heard before that Bungie Studios doesn't want to work on the series ended by Halo 3 anymore, the source also revealed how Bungie was set free.

Why should Microsoft take the risk of losing the developers that pretty much gave Xbox its name, you ask? Well, it looks like shareholders had enough money to get Bungie off its owner's hands.

Here's what the source told Game Informer: For an unstated, but significant amount of money, Bungie shareholders bought the studio name back from Microsoft. Our source also revealed that even though Microsoft will retain the rights to Halo, Microsoft also has "the right of first refusal" on future games.

Apparently, the fight is not finished yet. If rumors are true and Bungie already left Microsoft, Bungie may have the freedom to develop other games, but Microsoft can still publish Bungie titles and even ask for another Halo.

Word has it that the creators of Master Chief and his epic trilogy are already working on something, so it could either be the next big thing without Microsoft's backing, or as you would've guessed, an entry to the Halo franchise.
