A WOMAN has been arrested for perverting the course of justice after the collapse of a murder trial.

The 27-year-old from St Mellons, Cardiff, a witness in the trial at Cardiff Crown Court, was arrested yesterday and is due to appear at the city’s magistrates’ court today.

It comes just days after city man Mark Smith accused of murdering John Thorne walked free from court with all charges dropped after the dead man’s family came forward with evidence that bolstered his self-defence plea.

Mr Thorne, 29, was stabbed in St Mellons, Cardiff, on October 2 last year.

It was Mr Smith, 36, who called 999 himself when Mr Thorne died on his doorstep at Jenkins Way, amid angry scenes between them and others over a missing limited edition XBox computer games console.

He told the police operator: “I’ve been attacked in my home with a screwdriver – I got a knife to protect myself and a man’s lying outside bleeding.”

But no screwdriver was ever found and police charged Mr Smith with murder based on the evidence of a female witness who claimed to have seen him pick up a kitchen knife and attack Mr Thorne, who she said was unarmed.

Prosecuting, David Aubrey QC told Cardiff Crown Court: “In the days after her son’s death, Sharon Thorne was visited by one witness.

“She was told words to the effect ‘don’t worry, I’ve got rid of the screwdriver that John had with him and it will never be found’.

The Thorne family expressed their concerns, the Crown Prosecution Service decided not to offer any evidence and on Monday Mr Smith was freed after 10 months behind bars.
