But you'll only be controlling about 20 of them.

Raven Software and Activision have had great success with X-Men Legends, but with the upcoming movie tie-in taking care of the license for now, the companies have focused their efforts on a grander superhero action RPG with Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, which Activision today revealed will feature 140 characters from the Marvel universe.

Of course, it's worth noting players will not be playing as all of these superheroes. The game itself will focus on 20 of the most popular characters from Marvel lore -- Spider-Man, Wolverine, Blade and Captain America being some of the few revealed so far -- but many, many more favorites will be making appearances during the storyline.

It's hard to imagine the game won't have something for everyone. "Marvel: Ultimate Alliance delivers a new twist on action/RPGs where players' actions and choices ultimately determine what happens to the Marvel universe," said Activision global brand management VP Will Kassoy. "This coupled with the game's enormous character roster will deliver an action-packed experience that comic book fans have been waiting for."

You won't be able to avoid the game this fall, either; Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is scheduled to launch on all next-generation (does that include Wii?) hardware, current-generation consoles, the PC and every handheld under the sun. Talk about a big push.
