There must be a catch, right? Right.

Fans of Halo: Combat Evolved for the PC have a bit of celebrating in order today, as Microsoft has announced that, in partnership with Bungie, Microsoft Game Studios will be bringing Halo 2 to the PC.

The only catch is that you must be running a Windows Vista PC to enjoy the carnage.

On the upside, Halo 2 for Windows Vista will enjoy all the same features from both the single, and multiplayer online experience as seen on the original XBOX version. Not only that, but it will come standard with the latest maps added to the multiplayer component from the successful Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack expansion disc. Ambitious gamers can look forward to creating their own multiplayer levels, which could also pave the way for some serious, Halo: Combat Evolved style modding.

It's not hard to imagine why Microsoft would make Windows Vista a mandatory piece of the Halo 2 experience, even if it does seem a bit cheesy. With Direct X playing a major role in the foundation of Windows Vista, along with Microsoft wanting to renew the Games for Windows brand, forcing consumers onto the next big operating system by means of a title the magnitude of Halo 2 is, quite frankly, a stroke of diabolical genius.

Microsoft has yet to mention a release date for Halo 2 on the PC. Nor did they mention the use of the XBOX 360 controller with Windows Vista, but common sense dictates that it will be possible.

A hugely successful game hitting computers almost 3 years after the initial launch. Sounds almost like a Mac release.
