Xbox 360 controllers pop up at retail

We were lucky enough to get our hands on our very own Xbox 360 controller this morning. We managed to pick the unit up at a local retailer, a fact that was news to the representatives at Microsoft. As the Xbox 360 controller uses a USB connection, it appears that the PC Games side of the company has already launched a Windows version that from what we can tell is the same controller, plus software for PCs.

As far as the controller is concerned, it feels good in the hands. It feels similar to the current Xbox controller, particularly in terms of the analog sticks, D-pad and four main buttons. The triggers on the top are also similar, but the new buttons on the top replace the current black and white buttons. The form factor of these buttons reminds me a little of the GameCube controller’s Z button, but the actual buttons are much more responsive and springy.

The start and back button are easily accessible from the front of the controller, as well as the orb button in the middle. The controller is pretty comfortable, though the grips seem a tad big.

We’re posting some pictures of the controller, along with comparisons of the current Xbox controller, Ipod Nano and Game Boy Micro.

You might keep an eye out on the Windows accessory aisle of you local retailer if you want to get your hands on one early.
