RIAA Strikes Again

As much as this is off topic, I thought the subject was very pertinent in regard to what a lot of us probably due via file sharing programs, bit torrents, and IRC.

The RIAA (Recording Industry Assocition of America) launched its second wave of lawsuits against computer users who illegally share music tracks onine, suing 532 people. The association tracks Internet users by monitoring their computers' IP addresses.

Once an IP address becomes associated with song stealing, the RIAA has the grounds it needs to subpoena the names and/or addresses of the people using the offending IP addresses and notify them that a lawsuit has been filed against them.

In the past the RIAA gave offenders a chance to settle out of court before filing suit, but no more. The new "John Doe" system it employs lets the association file a blanket lawsuit against many unnamed offenders and then apply that lawsuit to individuals once they are identified. Although plans are in the works to return to a method that gives offenders a chance to settle, for now expect to be sued immediately if you are caught sharing music files on the Internet.

My initial thought on this was, there are so many people file sharing the odds of me getting caught are slim to none. Then again, that's what the other 532 poor souls probably thought too.
