Ok so a while ago I tripped over an ethernet cable going to my brother's XBOX and it ripped the cable out of the port on the back of the XBOX. Ever since then the port won't light up or even acknowledge a connection at all. Anyone else done this? Did I totally screw up the NIC? If I'm gonna pay to get it repaired, can someone tell me the cheapest, fastest place to send it?

Is the head of the cord still stuck in the port? If not, you might have just pulled a wire out somewhere inside.
If you're going to be modding the system anyway, it can't hurt to open 'er up and check for any loose wires. If you don't want to screw your warranty, better send it to an authorized repair specialist. I'm guessing you'd do this through the retailer where you bought the Box.
You'll find plenty of guys around here who are reliable and could fix it for you, though. (Sorry, I'm not one of them)

When your testing again please say your testing with a fresh CAT 5 cable. Look at the 8 copper tracks inside the NIC port, are they misaligned or bent in anyway. If you have pulled the port off the motherboard tracks its going to be a soldering job.
Quick TIP for the future, if you have LAN cables running across floors , snap the plastic Clips off one end of the connectors, and then if a tripping up accident occurs it will slide out the socket rather than rip. _________________ TCBM

I have never replaced one of those ports, how difficult is it? I have a 1.0 motherboard that I purchased to replace a customers machine and it turned out that it has a bad port.
I was going to attempt to repair it, but I was concerned that it possibly could have been something else motherboard related.
The vendor is sending me a replacement, but just curious to know if it's an easy repair. I have other motherboards laying around that were trashed by other customers modding attempts and could always remove a part if needed.

They not that bad, just a case of de-soldering, they fairly durable

hmmmmm
I'm going to give it a shot then. Desoldering is easy so if that is all it is. But, is there any part of the mobo that could be causing the issue, or is it a high percentage thing where it's usually the port itself?
thanks,

Yeh I think there are a few resistors and maybe a capacitor that can be knocked when get modding, I usually get it on the osscilliscope (spelling) or swap components from other boards, i enjoy repairs

When you say warranty do you mean like a store replacement plan? I know Best Buy offers a replacement plan when you buy the Xbox, I'm pretty sure my brother didn't get that....or do you mean that Microsoft gives a warranty with every Xbox? It was just bought last January. This xbox doesn't have any plans of being modded, I just want to keep it stock. I want to get someone else to fix it. I deal with computer internals all the time, but I just don't wanna screw up this Xbox.
The copper tracks are aligned fine.
It has been tested with working Cat 5 that works in my other Xbox.
Nothing looks physically wrong on the outside.
Does anyone know how long it takes for one of those shipping/repairing fiascos to Microsoft?

Hiya
Dunno bout over there, but in the UK companies have to give you one years warranty (manufacturer). So if you send it quick M$ should fix it, better that way so you don't void your warranty by openning it, how you know the track is ok if it's not opened?
If it's been opened M$ won't touch it, in which case you will need someone who does repairs like Realmccloy, me or whoever else on here

Who can fix me up for a good price with a new ethernet port? I'm located in the DFW area of Texas.
