Assassin's Creed Showcase: Mirage Moves the Franchise to Another Point in Time
It's been almost three years since Assassin's Creed fans got a new challenge but, following Ubisoft's recent showcase, we now know the wait is almost over. With the franchise celebrating its 15th anniversary, new content is on the way.
A 30-minute cinematic trailer (see video below) was released on September 10, 2022, and, within a couple of weeks, it notched up more than 500,000 views. That gives you an indication of just how much hunger there is for a new
Assassin’s Creed.
Assassin's Creed Remains Popular in Every Era
Further evidence of how popular the franchise is can be seen in the sales figures. Assassin's Creed Valhalla has generated over $2 billion in revenue for its developer, Ubisoft. Now, with Chinese software company Tencent upping its stake in Ubisoft, the Assassin’s Creed franchise will add to its arsenal in 2023 with Assassin's Creed Mirage. The latest adventure starts in 9th-century Baghdad during the Islamic Golden Age. However, as the assassin, Basim Ibn Ishaq, dismantles all who stand in his way, the story plays out over various locations.
Of course, it’s this ability to cross time and space that’s made Assassin’s Creed a hit. Unlike many franchises that choose a period in time and stick with it, the team at Ubisoft isn’t afraid to move through the generations. In this sense, Assassin’s Creed is like all the most popular war games online rolled into one. We know just from looking at the war games out there that players love battling as Roman centurions, medieval knights, and fearless Spartans. The developers at Ubisoft also know this, which is why Assassin’s Creed as a franchise isn’t stuck in time.
From the original Prince of Persia to Renaissance Italy and the high seas in Black Flag, there have been battles in all settings. With the new Assassin's Creed, we know that Baghdad and its four districts are where Basim will evolve from street thief to skilled warrior. As with previous releases, close-quarter combat, stealth, and parkour are essential skills. Assassin's Creed Mirage also sees the return of Black Box. These missions give players multiple ways to complete a single mission.
The Future of History's Playground
By all accounts, Assassin's Creed Mirage is going to be hit. It will last around 20 hours, which makes it more like the original Assassin's Creed. Reverting back to older formats could signal a slight change of direction from Ubisoft. The gaming market is becoming increasingly saturated, so offering a lighter product with optional downloadable add-ons will cater to a wider audience of casual and hardcore gamers. Then, of course, the next question is: where will Assassin's Creed go next?
The war games genre covers all periods, so maybe we’ll see a military installment. Maybe we'll see assassins doing their thing in a futuristic setting. The options are almost endless because war games are not only popular but varied. Ubisoft’s decision to not limit this game to a single period in time was a stroke of genius and that means the warrior spirit can live on for many years to come.
By the time Assassin's Creed Mirage goes on sale in 2023, it will have been three years since the last. When will we get another? That’s unclear, but we know from the Assassin's Creed showcase that VP brand executive producer at Ubisoft, Marc-Alexis Cote, wants “history to be everyone’s playground.” That suggests we’ll see more epic battles taking place in new eras over the next few years."
